Early indica tions suggest the Dallas Cowboys receiver will recover from a swollen spinal cord and herniated disc suffered early in Sunday’s 13-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and will play again this season. When that will be remains unknown. “It’s really too hard to tell how long he’s going to be out right now,” trainer Jim Maurer said. “We’re optimistic that Mike will be back this year.” Irvin, who is taking medicine to reduce the swelling, will see a Dallas-area spine specialist tomorrow. An MRI will be taken and compared to one made hours after the injury. How much has changed will determine the next step in his treatment. Exams Sunday showed swelling in the spinal cord in two places near the base of the skull. Maurer said he does not expect the new pictures to show any fur ther damage that may have been obscured by the initial swelling. “I think they got a pretty good picture of everything he incurred,” Maurer said. The trainer admitted yesterday that Irvin lost some feeling imme diately after the injury. “He had some limitations on the field,” Maurer said. “He did n’t have full motor function and he had pain in his neck.” Irvin was able to move his hands and feet within 15 min utes, much to the relief of his ter rified teammates. He was then strapped to a stretcher and taken to the spinal unit at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, where he spent the night. By yesterday morning, Irvin had regained full use of his functions — the most encot ing sign yet. “That’s one of the reason!; being released as early as to: Maurer said. Irvin, 33, has been a); leader for Dallas on and ot field since joining the tear. 1988. He has not missed af because of injury since Emmitt Smith’s rookie seas® “Michael has been a player for this organization^ long time,” said quarterback Aikman, who has won tk Super Bowls with Irvin, made a lot of big plays inaH big games. “We’re going to miss hisp ence and we’ll miss his comp live spirit. Hopefully it’ll onl' two weeks.” That is a highly optimistic'’ considering Maurer said Ini likely to be in the neck about a week as he deals'' soreness and stiffness. Theti^ said he would not specif whether surgery was an optic “You’ve got to let all the’ tors come into focus,” he “Let’s see how he responds® the next few days and the® few weeks.” Irvin was injured while tni to shake a tackle from Bot Taylor at the end of an 8f gain with 5:16 left in the & quarter. The damage occurK when safety Tim Hauck hit In'-[ on the head as he went down. Hauck’s shoulder pad collid with the side of Irvin’s helmet was a clean hit, but it twist* Irvin’s head awkwardly as slammed to the hard artificial I® of Veterans Stadium. “We’re fortunate that is not more seriously injured Cowboys coach Chan Gaileysaid Ernie Mills will start in Irvin’ 5 place. Rookie Wane McGarit) who has been inactive the las two weeks, also will get mo« playing time. “He’s a big part of this team" he IS this team,” McGarity said “It’s been that way for 12 years- so he’s going to be missed.”
