LOS ANGELES (AP) — NFL
great Jim Brown was sentenced
yesterday to three years of proba
tion and ordered to take domestic
violence counseling for smashing
his wife’s car with a shovel dur
ing an argument that led her to
call 911.
Brown also must pay $1,500
to a battered women’s shelter
and another $200 to a domestic
violence fund.
The 63-year-old Hall of Earner,
who was not in court, was told to
appear Oct. 20 with proof that he
had joined a counseling program.
Brown’s lawyer told Municipal
Court Judge Dale Fischer that his
client opposed any sentencing
that included domestic violence
conditions. He noted that a jury
found Brown guilty only of mis
demeanor vandalism on Sept. 10,
acquitting him of a charge that
he made a terrorist threat against
his wife, Monique.
“It’s unfair to put any condi
tions of domestic violence on a
man who’s been actually found
not guilty of domestic violence,”
lawyer William Graysen said out
side court.
Asked if he believed the court
was making an example of
Brown, Graysen said, “It would
appear so.”
The prosecutor disputed that
view.
“We’re simply trying to hold
him, like any other ordinary citi
zen, accountable,” Deputy City
Attorney Grace Lee said.
Brown was not in Hollywood
Municipal Court because he had
been visiting a daughter in
Atlanta and missed the plane
home, his lawyer said.
The judge placed BrowiR
months’ probation, ordering
to enroll in and completed
terer’s counseling program'
to complete either 40 da?
work with the Holly' 1
Beautification Team, or
hours of other court-appi'
community service.
Brown also must pay a:
fine, $1,500 to a bad
women’s shelter and $200
domestic violence fund. His
ver’s license was suspended'
year.
