it, but it is more important for fresh
men to get to meet new people that
they normally wouldn’t meet.”
Shortner said she and her bud
dy went out together several times,
but only as friends.
“We tried to do things together,”
she said. “We went to go see the
Singing Cadets together, we went
dancing, we went to eat pizza one
night and we went to get ashes af
ter Bonfire burned.”
Shortner said students should
not be afraid of having a stranger
as a Bonfire buddy.
“It really wasn’t awkward, but
it was funny when we met,”
Shortner said. “He had to tell me
what he was going to wear so I’d
know who he was.
“I [will] have another buddy
again because it was such a good
experience last year.”
Todd said she is not expecting
much from her buddy but has an
open mind about the future of
their relationship.
“I don’t see guys getting all into
the gifts,” Todd said.
“1 think it’s more girly. 1 have
not met my buddy yet, but he
seems pretty cool on the phone. 1
wouldn’t mind if we were friends,
but I’m not expecting to be like
best buds.”

Allman Brothers’ Environmentalist
graves defaced
MACON, Ga. (AP) — Duane
Allman’s and Berry Oakley’s rela
tives are so adamant about pro
tecting their gravesites, they
bought the land immediately sur
rounding them and claim it is pri
vate — no trespassing.
“We don’t want anyone
[kicked] out of Rose Hill, but
don’t deface the graves,” Lars An
derson, an attorney for two rela
tives of the two Allman Brothers
Band founders, said.
“Don’t have sex on the graves,”
The two died in separate motor
cycle accidents in the early 1970s.
Macon Mayor Jim Marshall
said the cemetery is public prop
erty, and the hundreds of people
who flock to the graves each
month are welcome to visit.
It is also why criminal trespass
ing charges against a Macon Tele
graph photographer arrested while
taking photos of the graves were
dropped Friday.
Marshall said the city is consid
ering allowing a fence around the
graves and a sign to tell visitors
what they may and may not do.

She is 82 now, a botanist who I
lives down the road from the
chicken coop where the Leopold
family stayed on weekends when
they visited the 80-acre property in
southern Wisconsin. The federal
government wants to turn a near

The chicken coop that became !
the family’s home is on the Nation- j

Just like her father did up until |
his death in 1948, Leopold Bradley |
takes time to record the natural J

When great jazz is captured on
tape, a single moment becomes
every moment. Musicians may
take varying paths to a common
musical destination, but the
scenery is beautiful in each.
Brad Mehldau, Jorge Rossy and
Larry Grenadier find tneir ways in
their latest CD, Art of the Tho 4,
recorded over five nights at the Vil
lage Vanguard in New York City.
Between rigid form and fluid
improvisation, Mehldau dances
across a melody line while leaving
plenty of space for his compatriots
to step in. When the three artists
solo over and around each other,
an astounding grace is bom — the
musical equivalent of a three-man
jitterbug at 150 beats per minute.
At its heart. Art of the lYio 4 is
a prime example of incredible
acoustic jazz. (Grade: A-)
