Iwl jJUJglC The Battalion In 1949, Texas A&M became the first college in the United States to offer a de gree in oceanography, and today the de partment celebrates its 50th anniversary. Dr. William Bryant, head of the De partment of Oceanography, said a dinner today and a symposium Saturday will cel ebrate the anniversary. He said there will be six speakers at the dinner, including the director of the Na tional Oceanography and Atmospheric Agency, four speakers from the industry and one from A&M. Bryant said the oceanography adviso ry council will be inaugurated during the celebration and A&M’s department is one of the best in the nation. “It is the oldest Department of Oceanography in the country and we are ranked in the top 10 of the oceano graphic departments within the coun try,” he said. Bryant said the department has in creased the amount of information avail- “We’ve opened up knowledge of the oceans, particularly in the Gulf of Mexi co, the Caribbean and the Atlantic,” he said. “Some of the more renowned oceanographers have graduated from A&M.” Gerard Farrell, a media relations spe cialist for university relations, said de partment’s success is due in large part to their faculty. “We have some of the foremost re search scientists in the world,” he said. “Dr. John Morse, for example, who will be installed as the Scherck Chair in oceanography, is extremely highly re garded.” Farrell said the oceanography d ment is continuing to conduct res and make advances in the field.
