Meriwether said the change has not affected fraternity’s abil ity to have a good time. “It was the safe, responsible thing to do,” Meriwether said. “It wasn’t even hurting our social functions. We’re still having a great time. ” Meriwether said although there is still opposition to the idea of “going-dry” in some fra ternities, Phi Delta Theta is not the only fraternity headed for mandatory regulation. He said the Sigma Nu national council al ready made the resolution to be come alcohol free, but the chap ter has not “gone dry” yet. He said they have until next year to become an alcohol-free house. Blackwell said more fraterni ties will become alcohol-free in the future. “I think we’re probably going to see more fraternities at the in ternational level make the deci sion to be alcohol-free,” he said. “The Phi Delta Theta chapter and other chapters that take on this style of living beforehand are go ing to be in a much better posi tion to see it work.” Fitzwater said he began a rela tionship with Mikhail Gorbachev, one-time president of the former So viet Union, through summit meet ings in 1987. “I believe Gorbachev is one of the greatest and most courageous lead ers of all time,” he said. He said it is impossible to com prehend the impact Gorbachev had on the Soviet Union when he de nounced communism. He said the way the media is dig ging to find out about presidential candidate George W. Bush’s past is to be expected. “We can’t expect the media to not ask questions and we can’t censor the media’s questions, but you can censor how you answer the ques tions,” he said. “In 1992, [when President Clinton was elected] the American people said they don’t care about infidelities; they only care if he’s a good leader. ” Fitzwater said new technology, such as satellites and computers, have changed journalism by intro ducing the 24-hour new.v! “This was seen in thecL, the Gull War, some in the ^ batti son case and in the sky situation,” he said. Fitzwater said editing, live television anil competitive pressure ai| nalists.
