With a great name behind it in Lawrence Kasdan and very funny trailers, Mumford is sure to attract attention in its opening weekend. It is too bad most of that attention is undeserved. Doc Mumford, (Loren Dean) is a psychologist with something to hide in a small town that appro priately shares the doctor’s name. With a list of odd patients, Mumford (the person) struggles with issues of his own and the va riety of problems his patients pre sent him with, especially those of Sofie Crisp (Hope Davis). Kasdan {The Big Chill, Grand Canyon) returns in his first direc torial film since French Kiss in 1995. Kasdan, the master of en semble films, returns to familiar ground with this comedy, directing the film with a laissez-faire style far removed from his past films. Sadly, many of the movie’s supporting actors and actresses deliver more interesting perfor mances than those of Dean and Davis. Obviously hoping to create new stars (as he did with Kevin Costner and others), Kasdan cast these two relative unknowns in the lead roles. Davis does a decent job of act ing but lacks much of the on screen presence found in other fe male leads. Dean, in his biggest role to date, delivers a lackluster perfor mance which could be intention al or accidental. If it was an intentionally low-key performance, it should have been made more clear to the audience. Mumford is, at times, one of the wittiest offbeat comedies to come along in years, but slow movement and a weak perfor mance by the title character (the person, not the town) take away from the movie and prevent Kas dan from recreating the magic of movies past. Regrettably, that is about all Lawrence finds himself doing in this shallow action-comedy. Miles Logan (Lawrence) is a jewel thief arrested by the police mere minutes after hiding a pre cious diamond in an air-condi tioning duct at a construction site. After a two-year prison sentence, Logan is finally released and plans to reclaim his diamond. There is a slight problem, how ever — the construction site is now a Los Angeles police station. Logan must impersonate a cop to gain access to the building and suddenly finds himself in a vari ety of comedic situations. Directed by Les Mayfield {Flubber), this film basically is a Martin Lawrence showcase. Mayfield makes a high-gloss at tempt to stay away from typical action-comedy cliches.
