Gailey admits blew free-kick ca wai GAJLEY IRVING (AP) — Dallas Cowboys coach Chan Gailey admitted Tuesday that he goofed by not request-1 ing a free kick after a fair catch on the final play of the first half against the Atlanta Falcons. » Gailey said he knew of the rule that gives coach es the option of trying an uncontested field goal after any fair catch, but he figured that only was possible if there was time remaining. So when he saw 0:00 on the clock after punt returner Wane McGarity’s fair catch at the end of the second quarter Monday night, Gailey took his team to the locker room. “I’m always cognizant of being able to do it because I’ve always wanted to do it,” Gailey said. “I had a chance and I missed it.” The digest of rules in the NFL record and fact book specifically addresses no-time situation. “If time expires while ball is in ' ’The MIA play and a fair catch is i. mtibioti receiving team may cho:« extend the period” withiH kick, the book said. “Ho* place-kicker may not usete:|| Gailey already had that punter Toby Go win. also handles kickoffs, won the field goal if the te caught in Atlanta territoiy. “We lined Wane upon! and said, 'If you go behinil!:;l let it go. IRVING (AP) — Payback arrived quickly in the Dallas Cowboys locker room. A week after being bailed out by the offense, the Dallas defense returned the favor Monday night in a 24-7 victory over Atlanta. Against the Falcons, the guys who allowed Washington to put up 504 yards and 35 points in the opener set up 10 of Dallas’ first 17 points with an interception and a fumble. Then, when they started to slip in the final minutes, giving Atlanta at least a glimmer of hope, the defense roared back when Greg Ellis returned an interception 87 yards for a game sealing touchdown. “Last week we were proud of our offense for coming back and winning the game,” Ellis said. “But we knew we didn’t play well defensively and we wanted to come out and make a statement.” Dallas joined Detroit as the NFC’s only 2-0 teams. It is the best start for the Cowboys since their last Super Bowl season, 1995, and they get an extra week to savor it as they have a bye this Sunday. When Dallas returns Oct. 3 at home against Arizona, the sec ondary could have a new and improved look. Deion Sanders’ gimpy left big toe will likely be ready for action and there is a decent chance Kevin Smith will be ready to test his aching back. The Cowboys managed three interceptions without them Monday and had a Sanders-like 154 yards in returns. Amazingly, Ellis, linebacker Dexter Coakley and safety Izell Reese combined for more yards than the Dallas offense had on the ground (133) or in the air (98). The Cowboys had just 231 yards of offense, less than half the 541 they gained against the Redskins in a 41-35 overtime victory. Then again, they did not need much as their three scoring drives went 4, 60 and 26 yards. “I think our team has a great sense that it takes everybody to win and it’s not going exactly the same every wi Cowboys coach Chan G said yesterday. “The offense isn’t geir score 41 every week ace' defense isn’t going to ge five turnovers and score week. It’s going to be prolj somewhere in between weeks. So our enthusiasm!! the whole team.” The damper on the cel! tion is that Dallas did note! ly stop the same Atlantal that represented the NFC Super Bowl. This unit was< I out Pro Bowlers Chris Chet and Jamal Anderson. Chandler suited up bu: not play because of a still [ hamstring. Anderson torei ment in his right knee six utes into the game and is oil the season. With Tony Graziani Danny Kanell trying to fill! Chandler at quarterback Byron Hanspard repli Anderson, the Falcons just 148 yards through quarters. Atlanta crossed Dll 49-yard-line only once in time, and that trip ended"' missed field goal. A big push from the defen line was the catalyst for Cowboys. Dallas’ five sacks its most in 24 games, datinf November 1997. Chad Hentt had two of them, doubling 1998 total, and rookie P ( Zellner got his first sack on game’s final play. “There was a lot of good? sure without blitzing,” Cl said. “I thought we got art- the quarterback and made happen with just our front! 1 That was good to see.” The shutout lasted 56min c until a 45-yard touchdownf; from Kanell to Tim Dwif Then the Falcons began mil things interesting. A 52-yard pass to Ten 1 Mathis that ricocheted ot defensive back helped Atlanta within four yards making it a 17-14 game in final minute.
