Gailey couldn’t hold composure
during Cowboys’ comeback
IRVING (AP) — Other
than preferring a base
ball cap to a fedora, Chan
Galley’s „ sideline
demeanor is pretty simi
lar to the stone-faced sto
icism of Tom Landry.
But as the Dallas
Cowboys erased a 21-
point deficit to beat the
Washington Redskins 41-
35 in overtime Sunday,
Gailey turned Jimmy
Johnson-like — whoop
ing, hollering, backslap-
ping and even jumping
with joy.
Gailey was still riding
that emotional wave
Monday as he discussed
how the season-opening
victory, and the way it
happened, will help the
team over the next 15
games.
“We talk about don’t
quit, you can come back,
if they can score 20 in the
third quarter you can
score 21 in the fourth
quarter, but until you do
it and see it and feel it
and it happens, you’re
not sure,” Gailey said.
“Now, they realize they
can. I’m not sure you can
put a value on that.
“For the rest of the
rest of the year, we can
say, ‘We’re not out of it.’
We have proof. It gives
you that extra sense of
confidence.”
Cowboys coaches had
to pull out all their come
back cliches after Dallas
gave up 32 straight
points, turning a 14-3
lead into a 35-14 deficit
going into the fourth
quarter.
Then came the stuff
coaches preach can hap
pen but hardly ever does:
a 70-yard touchdown
drive, a recovered onside
kick, a 66-yard touch
down march,< a 90-yard
touchdown drive with
out any timeouts that
was helped by four
defensive penalties, the
game-tying extra point
ricocheting in off the left
upright, a botched field
goal by Washington and,
finally, a 76-yard bomb
from Troy Aikman to a
wide-open Raghib Ismail
for the victory.
The touchdown trig
gered a wild celebration
that didn’t include
Gailey. Amazed by what
he had seen, Gailey stood
bent at the waist, clutch
ing his knees until he
regained his composure.
He maintained it until
halfway through his
news conference yester
day, when he was
explaining what the
comeback showed him
about his players.
“I learned I’m excited
about going to war with
the guys we’ve got on
our football team. I’m
excited about that. I want
to say a lot more,” he
said, pausing, “But I’m
not going to say it.”
Aikman’s perfor
mance in the fourth
quarter and overtime
stiff-armed two of the
biggest knocks against
him: that he can’t throw
the long ball and he can’t
rally the Cowboys the
way Roger Staubach did.
None of those critics
were in the Dallas hud
dle. Teammates believed
in Aikman the way the
Denver Broncos knew
John Elway would carry
them. He responded by
erasing a bigger deficit
than Staubach ever did,
matching Danny White’s
team-record recovery in
1984 against New
Orleans.
“There was never a
sense of panic,” Gailey
said. “He knew what we
were able to do and what
we were trying to do.”
On the final play, the
Redskins expected the
Cowboys to run on
third-and-2 from their
24. Gailey gambled
with a bit of reverse
psychology.
“You’ve got to make
some of those calls some
times,” he said. “I
thought our defense was
starting to get back into it
and we could still win
even if we didn’t make it
there. I felt the reward
was worth the risk.”
Ismail’s catch was the
longest of his career and
the longest touchdown
Aikman had thrown in
the regular season since
an 80-yarder against
Washington in the 1993
opener. It gave Aikman
his first five-TD game
since high school.
“I think this says a lot
for the organization, it
says a lot for the coaches
and players to have guys
that keep battling and
keep playing,” Aikman
said. “You don’t want to
get 21 points down every
week, but I think the
way we were able to
come back says a lot.”
Gailey rewarded the
team by giving them yes
terday off in addition to
their usual Tuesday
break. The Cowboys
have an extra day any
way because their next
game is Monday night at
home against Atlanta.

Woolsey took

every match last
week as the
Aggie won all
three of their
matches without woolsey
dropping a game. The 6-foot-3-
inch senior also earned all-tour
nament honors for the second
consecutive week after leading
the 17th-ranked Aggies to the

Jones Intercable Invitational in
Albuquerque, N.M., over the
weekend.
Woolsey averaged 4.44 kills,
2.44 digs and 1.33 blocks per
game while posting a .514 hit
ting efficiency for the week. She
collected 40 kills with only four
errors in 70 attempts and hit a
career-high .667 against
Southwest Texas State with 14
kills and no errors in 21
attempts.
Woolsey, from Chaska, Minn.,
also posted 12 blocks to give
her 394 for her career and move
her into fifth place in the A&M
all-time career records.
Woolsey and the Aggies return
to action Thursday as A&M hosts
the GTE Aggie Volleyball Classic.
