BY REECE FLOOD The Battalion The Texas A&M Soccer Team proved there is no place like home over the weekend by defeating both of its opponents in the GTE Soccer Classic at the Aggie Soccer Complex. The Aggies beat the U.S. Naval Academy Friday night by a score of 6-0, and then went on to outscore Ohio State Sunday af ternoon, 2-1. The two victories gave the Aggies the tournament championship. Junior midfielder Alison Peters was a major contributor for the Aggies this weekend as she scored two goals in each of the games. Peters scored the first two goals in A&M’s game against Navy. Peters’ biggest contribution, however, came in Sunday’s game against Ohio State. A&M was down 1-0 in the second half when sophomore forward Michelle Remington passed the ball to a wide open Peters, who proceeded to shoot the ball across the front of the goal and into the top-left corner of the net. Peters said she was excited about the goal and was thankful that her teammate was able to make a good pass across the field. “Our team is so good about working the ball around,” she said. “We’ve been working all sea son on finding the back post, the backside player. On the first one especially, that was [Michelle], she gave me a great ball.” The goal tied the game and seemed to spark the Aggies. A&M instantly became more aggressive and more vocal as it increased the pressure on the Buckeyes. OPPORTUNITIES ARE WIDE OPEN... \\\ .cum BRADLEY ATCHISON/The Battalion Freshman Heather Ragsdale dribbles the ball through the Naval Academy’s defense Friday night at the Aggie Soccer Complex. The Ags defeated Navy and Ohio State University to capture the 6TE Soccer Classic title. through a jumble of players direct ly in front of the Ohio State goal and find the foot of Peters, who then put it in the back of the net. A&M soccer coach G. Guerrieri said he was impressed with Pe ters’ play this weekend. “She had a big weekend,” he said. “She scored four goals. That’s two goals on Friday night and two goals [Sunday], So I would say that this was no doubt, as far as a college student, one of her better weekends.” Also looking good this week end was the Aggie defense. In Friday’s game, A&M limited Navy to only one shot on goal. On Sunday, the defense stepped up and held a talented Ohio State team to one goal. Guerrieri said he was happy to see his defense respond to a chal lenging offense. “I was real proud of them,” he said. “For the defense to come through this weekend wit[i such a good record, I think will help our confidence. ” Junior defender Amber Reynolds said it is difficult for other teams to score on the Aggie defense. “We’re just stepping up, play ing more aggressive, trying to win all the balls we can,” she said. “The only time they can get in be hind us is if they get it over our heads. We’re small, so naturally, we’re fast.” Peters and senior defender Ashley Fendley were named of fensive and defensive MVPs of the tournament, respectively. see Soccer on Page 9.
