News in Brief
Counseling Service
to offer screening
Student Counseling Service
(SCS) is offering free anxiety dis
order screening program today at
4 p.m. in MSC 226.
Dr. Andy Smith, associate direc
tor of counseling and coordinator of
training for SCS said that if a stu
dent is experiencing feelings of paiV
ic, fear or stress, the free screening
program will determine if the indi
vidual has anxiety disorders.
He said anxiety disorders are
treatable mental illnesses that af
fect more than 23 million Ameri
cans each year.
Smith said there will be an hour-
long informational, then an oppor
tunity for students to take a screen
ing instrument, a questionnaire and
finally, an opportunity to sit individ
ually and privately with a profes
sional to go over the inventory.
Informational materials on anx
iety disorders and other mental ill
nesses and referral will be given
as needed.
The free program will include an
educational presentation with a
video, an anonymous written self
test and the opportunity to meet
with a health professional.
“The Student Counseling Ser
vice is not diagnosing or treating
for any anxiety disorders,” he said,
“but is providing information, free
screening and referral if needed.”
