ittlrneys for both sides are allowed to strike 15 ju-

j have been questioned since jury selection began
death, which occurred outside the deep East Thxaslown
of Jasper.
Byrd’s body was discovered on June 7, 1998.
Jasper County jurors convicted King and sentence^
him to death last February.
Lawlis moved Brewer’s trial to Brazos County at the
request of Jasper County District Attorney Guy James
Gray to deny Brewer’s attorneys ah easy appeal issue
— a jury pool biased by the overwhelming media cov
erage of King’s trial.
Gray has said he believes King led the two other men
to kill, with Brewer providing ideology he gained as a
member of the pro-Aryan Confederate Knights of Amer
ica prison gang.
At King’s trial, his attorneys claimed their client
joined a white supremacist prison gang to survive beat
ings or rape by black prisoners.
King and Brewer met in prison. Both were paroled,
and Byrd was killed while Brewer was working odd
jobs in Jasper, which was King’s hometown.
Prosecutors have said they believe the three men
killed Byrd as a publicity stunt to promote their own
fledgling hate group and as an initiation rite of Berry
into the group.
Genetic material left on cigarette butts, found where
Byrd is thought to have been beaten and chained to
Berry’s truck, match the DNA of King, Brewer and Byrd
— all of whom are white.
Berry is still to be tried. The state is seeking the death
penalty for Brewer and Berry.

The Texas governor and Republi

celed the school visit Wednesday,
blaming bad weather that had de
