The crux of Montemayor’s cam paign — “Good Rates for Good Dri vers” — is a program that was es tablished last year targeting drivers living in areas the state identified as underserved by insurers. “There are many Texans out there with good driving records un necessarily paying more than their fair share of the premium dollars,” he said. The Market Assistance Program covers drivers in 382 ZIP codes across Texas in both rural and urban areas. Most are overwhelmingly low-income and high minority re gions, Montemayor said. Some consumer groups have ac cused the insurance industry of redlining or racial discrimination of customers. The industry denies the charge and Montemayor said the depart ment’s investigations “haven’t turned up a group insurance officials con spiring to exclude somebody.” “The insurance industry has looked at it and don’t necessarily find a problem with it,” Mon temayor said. “I on the other hand have studied this and am con vinced that the truth lies some where in between.’” D.J. Powers, attorney for the Cen ter of Economic Justice, said while he is encouraged that the depart ment recognizes a problem, it is not enough. The state should take a hard line with insurance companies, he said. “The data is unequivocal. In surers in Texas are redlining,” Power said. Jerry Johns, president of the Southwestern Insurance Informa tion Service, denied the redlining charge and said the industry sup ports Montemayor’s efforts. Address Continued from Page 1 A comprehensive transporta tion package and a community recycling program are other ini tiatives Hurd intends to outline in the address. “I hope students will get ex cited, because student govern ment is going to be doing some visible things to improve life on campus,” he said. “I hope people go away asking what they can do to help make Texas A&M a better university. ” Diversity Bicycle Continued from Page 1 aimed at helping Aggies move around campus and reduce their stress by eliminating the fear of having a bicycle stolen or worrying about loeking it up. Freshmen Continued from Page 1 Mia Warner, a co-chair for the Leaders in Freshman Engineering (LIFE) and a junior chemical engi neering major, said freshmen need to consider their interests and goals from the beginning of their first se mester at A&M. “You never know what you might do,” Warner said she advis es freshmen to take academics se riously at the same time keeping their options open.
