WASHINGTON (AP) — Texas Gov. George W. Bush’s
campaign expects to report raising more than $50 mil
lion by the end of September — more than any presi-
ential candidate ever has had available to seek the
lomination. A Bush adviser said yesterday the total
:ould surpass $60 million.
“I know there are some who are talking about my ca
pacity to raise money, particularly some of my oppo
nents,” Bush said while campaigning in Omaha, Neb.

Bush raised a record $37 million through June 30 and
las continued to take in money since then, including
250,000 yesterday at a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser in Ne-
iraska. The campaign has planned fund-raisers next
eek in Kansas and Rhode Island.
Last week, the Bush campaign raised about $1 mil
lion from events in Georgia, North Carolina and South
arolina.
“The $50 million certainly would indicate that
ealthy donors want to ride with a winner,” said Kent
ooper of Public Disclosure, an Internet consulting
fnrm. “The aggressive nature of the fund-raisers indi-
ates that he has captured the fund-raising arm of the
epublican Party.”
By the end of September, Bush will have raised more
loney than any other presidential candidate ever has,
ven when federal matching funds are figured in.

In those cities, residents and
businesses have been forced to pay
more for auto emissions controls in
an effort to reduce air pollution.
Like San Antonio, Austin
failed to comply with federal lim
its for ground-level ozone this
year and is in danger of being de
clared in violation of the Clean
Air Act.
