WASHINGTON (AP) — Texas Gov. George W. Bush’s campaign expects to report raising more than $50 mil lion by the end of September — more than any presi- ential candidate ever has had available to seek the lomination. A Bush adviser said yesterday the total :ould surpass $60 million. “I know there are some who are talking about my ca pacity to raise money, particularly some of my oppo nents,” Bush said while campaigning in Omaha, Neb. I would suggest that if you ask them, they would like ■o trade places.” Bush raised a record $37 million through June 30 and las continued to take in money since then, including 250,000 yesterday at a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser in Ne- iraska. The campaign has planned fund-raisers next eek in Kansas and Rhode Island. Last week, the Bush campaign raised about $1 mil lion from events in Georgia, North Carolina and South arolina. “The $50 million certainly would indicate that ealthy donors want to ride with a winner,” said Kent ooper of Public Disclosure, an Internet consulting fnrm. “The aggressive nature of the fund-raisers indi- ates that he has captured the fund-raising arm of the epublican Party.” By the end of September, Bush will have raised more loney than any other presidential candidate ever has, ven when federal matching funds are figured in. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Texas Gov. George W. Bush is getting the endorsement of more than 100 prominent Iowa farm activists, including backers in each of the state’s 99 counties. The list includes prominent commodify group leaders, political figures and local farm leaders. It is by far the most extensive compila tion of Iowa farm leaders by a GOP presidential candidate. Bush heads to the Dallas Center farm of Tom and Judy Barrett to day to announce the en dorsements. The backing is im portant in the caucus campaign, fn part be cause the farm economy is suffering from histor ically low commodity prices, and many farm ers face bankruptcy. FLY NOW At United Flight Systems THE EXPERIENCED FLIGHT SCHOOL an Antonio air standard questioned SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San kntonio appears to have fallen out )f compliance with federal clean lir standards after an air monitor igain recorded a high ozone level. If the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission verifies londay’s ozone recording, the city likely will lose its clean-air status, 1 ffMayor Howard Peak said. “I’m disappointed that we have ' reached this point,” Peak said. For the fourth time this month, /V-pn air monitor in northwest San ■Antonio detected an average ozone level of more than 81 parts per bil lion over an eight-hour period. The mayor said the city might -contest a high ozone reading of Aug. 21 that local officials argue can be attributed to Hurricane Bret. “/ am disappointed that we have reached this point. ,, — Howard Peak San Antonio mayor Weather systems from the north and the south converged in the region at that time, providing for “a strange effect of sorts,” Peak said. “We also at that same time had lots of additional vehicle traffic heading up to San Antonio that could well have contributed to our exceedence,” he said, refer ring to a mass evacuation of coastal residents who traveled to San Antonio that day. Dallas and Houston already have been classified as having high and unhealthy ozone levels. In those cities, residents and businesses have been forced to pay more for auto emissions controls in an effort to reduce air pollution. Like San Antonio, Austin failed to comply with federal lim its for ground-level ozone this year and is in danger of being de clared in violation of the Clean Air Act.
