Mismatched roommates make for nightmare situatvs

Sue Foster, assistant di
rector of residential educa

come to college expecting
their new roommates to be

life, and it often does not al

busy with sorority rush the first week she lived
in her dorm and did not have much time to take
care of her laundry, so her roommate tried to
help.
“She had taken my laundry basket (trying to
be helpful] and decided to wash the clothes for
the both of us, and she didn’t separate any
thing,” Johnson said.
“I came back, and she was sitting on the edge
of her bed crying. When I asked her what was
wrong, she told me that she did my laundry and
then pointed over to my side of the room.”
Johnson said she was literally speechless as
she viewed her discolored wardrobe.
“I admit 1 was upset, but I really didn’t want
to say anything because she was really emo
tional and she hadn’t done anything really
major to upset me,” Johnson said.
Foster said actions like these where stu
dents do not tell their roommates about
things annoying them is called “saving it
up.”
“Many students like to avoid conflict, so
they avoid mentioning any little problems
that may be bothering them,” Foster said.
“What this eventually causes is that a sim
ple action, such as taking ice-cream from the
freezer, may set off a huge outburst.”
“If you are saving it up then it is big
enough to mention.”
Ttey Martin, Class of ’98, said his room
mate’s girlfriend was always nagging the
two of them to clean up their room when
he lived on campus.
“Even though she was over in our
room a lot, I really didn’t care what she
said,” Martin said. ^
