W hen R.C. Slocum took over
the reins of the Texas A&M
Football team in 1989, the
program was at a crossroads.
Former head coach Jackie Sher
rill had returned the program to
national prominence, but after be
ing placed on three years proba
tion in 1988 and posting a 7-5
record that season, A&M football
easily could have headed down
ward.
Slocum did not allow that to
happen however, going 8-4 in his
first season and leading the Aggies
to a berth in the John Hancock
Bowl.
That first season was a sign of
things to come in Aggieland. In the
past 10 years, Slocum has bridged
the gap between national promi
nence and national title contender
to become not only the winningest
coach in A&M history, but one of
the winningest coaches in the na
tion.
Slocum attributes his consistent
winning to many factors inside the
University.
“A lot goes into winning,”
Slocum said. “First of all I’ve had
real good support from the admin
istration here. They really have
been supportive over the years.
I’ve had good assistant coaches
and have obviously had good
players. It’s really been a combi
nation of a lot of things. The sup
port of the 12th Man at home has
also contributed to that.”
