U.S. dominates in relays
Johnson wins record ninth Championship gold medal
SEVILLE, Spain (AP) — “Gold
en Boys” Michael Johnson and
Maurice Greene put their special
golden touches on the final day of
the World Championships.
Each anchored a winning U.S.
relay yesterday and entered their
names prominently in the champi
onships’ record book.
The businesslike Johnson, win
ner of his fourth straight 400-meter
title earlier in world record time,
ran a sizzling leg in bringing the
U.S. 1,600-meter relay team home
in 2:56.45, the year’s fastest time
and the seventh-best ever. It was
the Americans’ third consecutive ti
tle, each relay anchored by John
son.
Johnson, who also owns two
200 titles, now has nine gold
medals at the World Champi
onships, the most by any athlete —
one more than Carl Lewis.
“It’s an honor. It’s a
testament to what
I’ve tried to do in
my career.”
— Michael Johnson
On his record nine career gold
medals at the track and field
World Championships
“It’s an honor,” Johnson, timed
in 43.50, said of breaking Lewis’
record. “It’s a testament to what
I’ve tried to do in my career: to be
consistent, go into every champi
onships on the top of my game and
go in to win.”
Jerome Davis gave the Ameri
cans the lead from the outset, then
Antonio Pettigrew, Angelo Taylor
and Johnson continued to widen
the advantage as the Americans
beat runner-up Poland by nearly 2
1/2 seconds before a capacity
crowd of more than 50,000.
The enthusiastic Greene, the 100
and 200 champion, overcame
Britain’s Dwain Chambers on the
final leg of the 400 relay with a sen
sational 9.12-second effort, carry
ing the Americans to victory at
37.59, the fastest time in the world
this year and the fifth-best ever.
Jones arrested after traffic stop
. HIGHLAND PARK (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner
Jerry Jones was arrested yesterday after he drove away
with his family before a police officer had finished
writing a speeding ticket.
Jones was in one vehicle and his family was behind
him in a Suburban around 10:30 a.m. yesterday on
their way to church services, WFAA-TV reported. An
employee of Jones’ was driving the Suburban.
Highland Park police chief Darrell Fant said an of
ficer pulled over the Suburban for going 45 mph in a
30 mph zone. Jones was not stopped, but pulled over
on his own and went to where an officer was ques
tioned the driver of the other car.
“He said he was in a rush and asked if he could go
ahead and take the family members on to church,”
Fant said. “The officer told him, Til just be a minute.
I’ll do this as fast as I can.’ He made some remark and
then did not follow the order of the officer and took
the vehicle anyway."
Officials said the officer radioed ahead and another
police vehicle tried to pull Jones over, but he did not stop.
Jones proceeded to the Highland Park United
Methodist Church, about a mile from where the traffic
stop took place. Jones let his family out at the church,
then drove off again. Around the corner, he pulled into
a private drive, where police arrested him.
