Music Terry Dexter has a lot going for her. Apart from being raised in the birthplace of Motown and a slinky look designed for video presentation, Dexter has a voice that can wail with Whitney Hous ton or scratch like Mary J. Blige. Unfortunately, one of the few things she doesn’t have a gift for is the process of selecting produc ers. Her songbird voice is reduced to pop blah against a backdrop of Muzak-generic instrumentals the rest of the industry left alone long ago. Despite her producers’ com plete inability to step out of the pack, Dexter makes the album a showcase of her ability to croon with the best of them. When Dexter stretches it out for a ballad, such as on “Alone” avA “Xou’W teAwr Myss NVc,” heart-wrenching delivery con vinces. The only two up-tempo tracks on the album are a dramatic state ment of “I’m Every Woman” pop sensibility. It is a shame this lovely talent is not backed up by musicians of the same calibre. Until she is, she will never get the attention she deserves. (Grade: C +) — Stephen Wells JACT [ACT CD Courtesy of Trauma Records JACT can easily be described as a poor imitation of a whiny British rock band. Music fans should not be forced to put up with any other Oasis-style band. Every single song is a slow, melodic rock tune with the same annoying singer and uninspired lyrics. The current single “(Through With) Excuses,” which can be heard overplayed on the radio, is a perfect example of how the en tire album sounds. The band never experiments with style or tries anything origi nal, but keeps the same depress ing beat song after song. The only interesting song on the album is “Magic #3,” which takes a stab at trying something different from the rest of the mediocre album. The lyrics are uninspired and, for the most part, unintelligible. This is a band that should have never left touring coffee houses and never should have been payed to make music. With all the talented artists out there today making innova tive and original albums, this is a band that can be overlooked and easily forgotten.
