NFL Europe ve
Bates, Fricke invited tocnk
W/CH/TA FALLS /AFJ — ZV
Dallas Cowboys have added for
mer NFL Europe offensive lineman
Ben Fricke and Chad Bates to fill in
for several players out with
injuries.
“1 don’t think there are any unre
alistic expectations,” Dallas coach
Chan Gailey said yesterday. "But at
the same time, I don’t want them to
feel like they’re camp fodder.”
Dallas was thin on blockers for
Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith
because of injuries on three straight
days to Tony Hutson, Mike Kiselak
and Earl Scott. Hutson and Kiselak
filled in at first-team right guard
while Everett Mclver recovered
from knee surgery.
The Cowboys learned yesterday
that Kiselak, a crucial backup

will be out for the season. An

extensive damage,” team owner
Jerry Jones said.

Oakley visits Lakers; Outlaw re

AP — Charles Oakley got the
Hollywood treatment from the
Los Angeles Lakers yesterday,
lunch with Shaquille O’Neal and
Kobe Bryant and a tour of the
new arena from Jerry West.
Ron Mercer was shipped from
Boston to Denver, Bo Outlaw re
signed with Orlando and Derek
Fisher landed a seven-year con
tract from the Lakers, who are
trying to convince Oakley to play
power forward for them for $2
million.
Oakley is demanding $8.5 mil
lion annually for three years from
the Toronto Raptors, who have
offered $5.5 million per year.
Mercer was traded from the
Celtics to the Nuggets in a six-
player deal that also sent Popeye
Jones and Dwayne Schintzius to
Denver for Danny Fortson, Eric
Washington, Eric Williams and a
first-round draft choice in one of
the next three years.
Fortson, a 6-foot-7 forward
who ranked fourth in the NBA in
rebounding last season, is going
into the final season of his three-
year rookie contract — just like
Mercer.
Boston did not want to meet
Mercer’s asking price, which was
believed to be in excess of $50
million for a six-year extension.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Big Ten
does not plan to add a 12th mem
ber any time soon, commissioner
Jim Delany said, declaring expan
sion “a dead issue” just months
after Notre Dame University
spurned the conference.
“We haven’t had any activity
at all since the Notre Dame deci
sion, no calls from presidents or
athletic directors,” Delany said at
the annual Big Ten meeting. “I
don’t expect expansion in the
next decade.”
In February, after Notre Dame
turned down the Big Ten follow
ing months of talks, Delany had
said the conference might consid
er searching for another school.
Syracuse University and the
University of Missouri were men
tioned as candidates.
Now, it appears the search is
over.
