The album is a good compilation of 12 songs that are groovy. Chrissie Hynde’s flawless and powerful vocals are backed by the equally powerful rhythms of guitarist Adam Seymour and drummer Martin Chambers, blending instrumental and vocal music together for an upbeat but not quite “pop” album. "Popstar" is probably the album’s best track; the song is infectious enough to have listen ers tapping in time or dancing along. However, when the Pretenders stray from faster songs, they tend to fall flat. “Dragway 42” seems to slow down the whole album and the listener down. It is simply better to skip the track and stay with what works. However, give “Samurai” and “Biker” a shot; their slow, hyp notic beats make them the only slow Pretenders’ songs that actu ally work. f On the whole, the album is a solid release for the Pretenders; just stay away from the slow, “emotional” songs — unless you are suffering from insomnia. Most of them start with the let ter “s,” and due to common decency will not be printed. It is hard to categorize McAnally’s music. It is part soft rock, part country, part jazz and mostly crap. McAnally tries to blend too many types of music together leaving an unbearable finished product. If Kenny G played country music, this is what it would sound like. The only people that McAnally could find to enjoy his music are students at the Helen Keller school for the deaf and blind. In the first song of the album, “Looking Back,” McAnally almost draws the listener into the album with decent music flowing from his acoustic guitar, but then he starts singing and just ruins everything. Not that he is a bad singer, but his singing just detracts from the music. The only bright spot on the album is the first few seconds of the first song. McAnally’s lyrics sound like something a seventh grader would slip into the locker of a girl he has a crush on to try and impress her. This album is just bad, hope fully McAnally has a day job.
