BEIJING (AP) — If the experts
are right, China is nearly ready to
put astronauts into space.
They expect the Chinese to
launch an unmanned spacecraft
later this year and put human
crews into orbit next year. That
would make China only the third
nation, after Russia and the
United States, to put a human
being in space.
“The Chinese will be able to
show the rest of the world that,
despite what everybody has said
about them, they have developed
the capability to put people in
space,” Phillip Clark, an expert on
the Chinese program, said.
China has ploddingly progressed
toward a manned space mission for
more than three decades.
It put its first satellite in orbit
in 1970 and in 1975, retrieved a
recoverable satel-
lite, a key step
toward achieving
manned space
flight.
But the highly
secretive manned
space program,
known as Project
921, has gathered
momentum this
decade, nurtured
by bigger bud

assistance and a
fear among the
communist lead
ership that China

RAMIN, West Bank (AP) —
Israel’s longest-held Palestinian
detainee returned home Sunday
after nearly six years in prison
without charge or trial, in a case
that brought new scrutiny on
Israel’s detention practices.
Human rights activists hope
the new government of Prime
Minister Ehud
Barak will bring
an end to the
controversial pol
icy of administra

which allows
police to hold
prisoners with
out trial in cases
they say involve security threats.
Thirty carloads of family mem
bers accompanied Osama
Barham after he crossed the
checkpoint between Israel and
the West Bank, and relatives fired
weapons into the air when the
convoy rolled through his village
of Ramin.
“We saw death with our eyes
but we ignored it,” several
women relatives sang.
Earlier, at the Supreme Court
in Jerusalem, Barham sat smiling,
sandwiched between two police
men. Israeli rights activists who
had lobbied for his release
reached out to shake hands with
him.
The court approved a compro
mise agreement with police offi
cials in which Barham pledged
not to engage in violent activities
of any kind in return for his
release.
