Right now Charlie Robison
might be more famous for the
fact he married one of the Dixi e
Chicks than the fact he is a
good singer and songwriter.
Odds are this will not be the
case for long.
Robison does not have the
sound most people expect when
they think of Texas music. His
music goes just a little beyond
Texas and right into Nashville.
Robison’s album has just a
touch of the mainstream coun
try sound that is pumped out
continuously by Country Music
Television.
But do not be scared —
Robison is true to Texas and
hasn’t let the Lone Star sound
leave his music. This flavor sets
Robison apart from the main
stream country stars, and the
touch of Nashville in his music
sets him apart from the Texan
musicians.
Ministry

With songs like “Barlight,”
“My Hometown” and “Loving
County,” Robinson exhibits his
songwriting abilities, which is
something else that distinguish
es Robison from most main
stream country musicians — he
actually writes his own songs.
(Grade: B)
With a deep, booming voice
harking back to a time in coun
try music history when singers
like Merle Haggard reigned
supreme (and with song writing
abilities to boot), it is a wonder
why more people are not Kevin
Smith fans.
Smith’s songs are about
what most Texans know or
have felt at least once or twice
in their lives: Texans want to
hear Texas music, Texas is
heaven and those bottle caps
on Pearl are confusing after a
few beers.
His songs can relate to any
body who has lived, even if
just for a short period of time,
in Texas.
Sadly, the best song on the
album is not his own. “L.A.
County,” a Lyle Lovett cover,
overshadows his own songs,
but maybe Smith can use this
as a learning experience.
With this album. Smith is
walking down the same path
that his fellow Aggies Robert
Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett first
paved, which is not bad compa
ny considering the fame that
both of them have enjoyed.

“People will share information with their Net-
mate that they would not ordinarily share in their
real-life relationships and can represent a potential
threat to any primary relationship or marriage,”
Greenfield said.
Arnold LeUnes, a professor of psychology at
A&M, said there is much to learn as to why the
Internet can become addictive to some people.
“You have all of the romances that develop on
the Internet that probably tell us something about
loneliness and desperation,” LeUnes said. “The
fact [is] that some people live such unfulfilled
lives that they turn to something like [the Internet]
for romance.”
LeUnes said there are various other reasons
why certain people become addicted.
“You can sit on the Internet at night instead of
facing up to the fact that you're reclusive or not
doing well in your social life,” LeUnes said.
“Really, it can protect you from reality.”
LeUnes said Internet addiction can be a substi
tute for accepting one’s personal problems.
“Internet addiction could also be looked at as a
kind of defense mechanism [by which] people
protect the integrity of their selves and their feel
ings of self worth by rationalizing, projecting,
engaging in reaction formation, etc.,” LeUnes said.
“Every [reaction] serves as a useful function in
that it protects [the addicted person] from con
stant bombardment of the self by negative infor
mation.”
LeUnes said defense mechanisms perform a
useful role in an individual’s psychologicalWt
until they are used too much.
“In a sense, this addiction can be viewed
same way, as a kind of defense mechanise
LeUnes said. “[Addictions] serve a usefulfunci
until they are overused, at which point theyls
you down a faulty path.”
