Teen enters not-guilty plea
to classmate’s 1997 Idlling
Israeli officials refuse to extradite 19-year-old
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A Mary
land teen entered a surprise plea of
innocent Monday to charges of mur
dering a classmate but admitted he
helped dismember the body and
burn it, setting the stage for a trans-
Atlantic trial that could strain U.S.-
Israeli ties.
The grisly 1997 killing in Mary
land has pitted the Israeli justice sys
tem against members of the House
of Representatives and Attorney
General Janet Reno, who are angry
at Israel for refusing to extradite
Samuel Sheinbein, 19, for trial at
home.
Sheinbein, wearing a plaid shirt
and black pants, stared straight
ahead as his lawyer, David Libai,
told a Tel Aviv court on Monday he
was not guilty of killing fellow teen
ager Alfred Tello Jr.
The plea means Sheinbein will
face a full trial in Israel, where he fled
for shelter a few days after Tello’s mu
tilated, dismembered body was
found in an empty garage near the
suspect’s home in Aspen Hill, Md.
Israel’s Supreme Court ruled in
February that Sheinbein technically
was an Israeli citizen and therefore
could not be extradited. His father
was born in Israel but left with his
family in the 1950s.
Prosecutors in Maryland joined
“It (the plea) shows
his (Sheinbein’s)
continued ability
to manipulate the
Israeli legal system”
— Douglas Gansler
Montgomery County
state’s attorney
Reno in expressing their disappoint
ment over the decision, but pledged
to work with Israel should a trial be
necessary.
Libai, a former Israeli justice min
ister, told the court Monday that
Sheinbein has “never made a con
fession, either here or in the United
States.”
Libai conceded Sheinbein was
in a car with Tello before the
killing and said his client was
guilty of dismembering and burn
ing the body on Sept. 18, 1997,
two days after the killing.
But he challenged the state to
prove Sheinbein took an active part
in the killing
At earlier court hearings, Libai
had indicated Sheinbein would
admit to the charges, and he had
told the Associated Press that “we
will not contest the facts of the
case.”
In Maryland, Montgomery Coun
ty State’s Attorney Douglas Gansler
expressed anger at the turnaround
Monday .
“Sheinbein through his lawyer
has said he was going to plead
guilty if he wasn’t extradited,”
Gansler said. “It shows his con
tinued ability to manipulate the
Israeli legal system.”
Fireworks kill 4 over holiday weekend
(AP) — Holiday weekend fireworks accidents killed
four people as pyrotechnics displays misfired or blew up
prematurely in two towns.
Three of the victims were fatally injured at Center
ville, Ark., when one fireworks shell exploded just after
it was launched Sunday, shooting a fireball into the open
door of a trailer where more fireworks were being as
sembled, Yell County Sheriff Bill Gilkey said Monday.
“There was a dud that went about treetop high and
then went off,” witness Roy Tillman said. “Then the
whole thing blew up.”
The explosion took place about a quarter of a mile
from spectators, Gilkey said.
Two teen-agers were killed in the blast, and a third
person died Monday, Gilkey said.
In Peoria, Ariz., stacks of fireworks started detonat
ing Sunday while workers from the Salt Lake City-based
Lantis Fireworks were still unloading them for a Fourth
of July show, police and fire officials said.
One worker suffered burns over 90 percent of her
body and died Monday at Maricopa County Medical
Center. Four others were injured.
