Call 845-0569 Today BARON DAVIS NO. 3 — CHARLOTTE HORNETS In this year’s guard-rich draft, Davis was consid ered by many to be the second-best point guard available behind Francis. A star collegiately at UCLA, the sophomore had hoped to stay close to home with the L.A. Clippers, but the Hornets felt he was just too good to pass up. Davis handles the ball well, can push the tempo when the occasion calls for it and consistently finds the open man. A knee injury that cost Davis a year no longer seems to be a worry. Charlotte has to be concerned, however, with Davis’ perimeter shooting. LAMAR ODOM NO. 4 — L.A. CLIPPERS Odom was an enigma heading into Wednesday’s draft as he refused most predraft camps and, at one point, inquired about reclaim ing his college eligibility at the University of Rhode Island. Personal problems aside, Odom showed during his sophomore year he was more than capable as a scorer and rebounder and is one of the best at getting his teammates involved. Some have questioned his mental toughness and tendency to pass up open shots in favor of his less-talented supporting cast. JONATHAN BENDER NO. 5 — INDIANA PACERS The Pacers have a lot riding on the future suc cess of Bender, trading valuable forward Antonio Davis to Toronto for the fifth pick. Bender, who jumped directly to the pros from Picayune High School in Louisiana, has been described as an effortless scorer with an strong perimeter game for a 6’11” player. Last year, he broke Michael Jordan’s McDonald’s All-America Game scoring record. However, he has a tendency to fall in love with that perimeter game, and at only 205 pounds, he lacks the bulk to battle underneath with the NBA’s power players. WALLY SZCZERBIAK NO. 6 — MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES Many scouts rated senior swingman Szczerbiak as the best shooter available in the draft. A smart, fundamentally sound player capable of putting up big numbers in a hurry from the “2” or “3” positions, Szczerbiak’s NCAA Tournament-leading 30 points per game for the University of Miami (Ohio) and predraft performances helped improve his stock leading up to Wednesday. Some have questioned his lack of foot speed, voicing concern that he will struggle to keep up with quicker players defen sively or getting his shot off over quicker, more aggressive NBA defenders. RICHARD HAMILTON NO. 7— WASHINGTON WIZARDS Hamilton’s performance in UConn’s victory Now that the NBA has conducted its annual draft, fans must wait for the start of the 1999- 2000 season to see how the former college and high-school standouts perform on the profes sional level. Among the rookies trying to prove themselves will be these 13 lottery selections: ELTON BRAND NO. 1 — CHICAGO BULLS Rumors abounded in the days leading up to the draft, as many expected the Bulls to trade the top pick, but Chicago surprised a lot of people and stuck by Brand. The Duke University sophomore was the early favorite for No. 1 after being named consensus College Player of the Year, but questions about his size (6’ 8”, 260 lbs.) and durability scared a lot of general managers away. Brand boasts a 7 feet 5 inches wingspan and a knack for grabbing rebounds will have to prove that he can stand up to the NBA’s 82-game schedule. STEVE FRANCIS NO. 2 — VANCOUVER GRIZZLIES The Grizzlies were elated to get Francis at No. 2, as it was no secret many teams, Charlotte and Toronto among them, coveted the University of Maryland junior. Projected as an NBA point guard, Francis will instead step in at off-guard for Vancouver beside last year’s second overall pick, Mike Bibby. Often compared to Allen Iverson, he is capable of playing both guard spots and can score in bunches. However, as with Iverson, critics question whether he can get teammates involved in the offense. over Duke in the NCAA Championship■ cemented his status in the lottery. Iditia ANDRE MILLER NO. 8 — CLEVELAND CAVALIERS Cleveland went into the draft looking dependable back-up to point guard ^ Knight and settled on University of Uta » Miller. Miller has been compared to the Mark Jackson and does show manyottn f skills. He is a leader who gets the ha* 1 I right man at the right time, plays soll(1 .1 and goes to the glass. The junior possesses all the ^ c tools — speed, jumping ability, stamina. He ^ active rebounder who loves to get the involved with his high-flying moves in the court. Unfortunately, Marion’s fundament^j not as impressive. He is at best an inconsii. shooter, and his ballhandling and passingij are considered subpar for the back™ Phoenix’s up-tempo, wide-open style Marion well. pting JASON TERRY l,V1, I NO. lO — ATLANTA HAWKS /nrespc The Hawks traded point guard June 2$ Blaylock to the Golden State Warriors foil 10th pick in the draft. That pick was usee| jh e . Blaylock’s apparent replacement, Universil nallyes Arizona senior Terry. Like fellow Wildcats p reven i ni Mike Bibby and Damon Stoudamire, ^ ofiveal possesses good speed and the abi/ity w P%hose points on the board. Like Blaylock, becomes erama , with lots of steals. Despite a slow telea: sajc | to Terry’s perimeter shot should come in bar ^ when defenses collapse on Dikembe MutomllB ^ TRAJAN LANGDON NO. 11 — CLEVELAND CAVALIERS ;J seril( The Cavs shocked many draft gurus w1m| lts s spent the No. 11 pick on senior Duke gageoure Langdon. Along with Szczerbiak, Langdon'P n d spe considered one of the draft’s best shooijet. Langdon was deadly from behind the aref from the free-throw line in college and bn:i lots of leadership skills. However, he is ail slow both offensively and defensively, w believe that lack of speed will limit Langdor.| being a Steve Kerr-like role player, but even| the Cavs expect him to be a strong contribEj off the bench. ALEKSANDAR RADOJEVIC NO. 12 — TORONTO RAPTORS In a guard-heavy draft, Toronto consid Radojevic the best big man available. Good skills and surprising agility help Yugoslavian, who averaged 15 points, i rebounds and four blocks per game last sea for Barton County (Kan.) Community Colli He has faced little competition of his call! having never played Division I college basi ball, and his numbers both in the United Sti and overseas have been modest. Nevertheless 7’3” and 245 pounds, Radojevic will be gi every opportunity to show his skills. j COREY MAGGETTE NO. 13 — ORLANDO MAGIC Maggette faced a flurry of criticism whet declared for the draft after one season at Dt but that is not to say that NBA teams were_ happy to have him. Traded by Seattle to J Magic on draft night, Maggette presents awl of potential. Scouts have said Maggette cc ‘ ^ become a Vince Carter, Dominique Wilkins-I player because of his athleticism and open-t skills. At the same time, though, Orlando rookie head coach Glenn “Doc” Rivers expeijL,, put in some time developing the 19-yeareJJ y ‘ maturity and fundamentals. nnotl Archery Continued from Page 3 earn up to 720 points. Each shooter will then be seeded indi vidually for an individual round. The top three shooters’ scores will then be added for the team round. After the “ranking round,” the teams will enter a single-elimina tion tournament. Thomas said he is confident his team will be successful in the Pan American Games. “We’ll be very strong,” he said. “The men’s team should do very, very well.” Thomas said he thinks the women’s team will also be suc cessful, but he is expecting strong competition from and Canada. After the competition over, Thomas will return A&M, where he will te archery classes in the fall spring semesters. He said he will try to lead A&M Archery Team to its I consecutive national chaff onship next spring.
