WIMBLEDON, England (AP) —
Singing in the rain since she could
not play in it, Alexandra Stevenson
did not let a dreary day intrude on
her dreamy Wimbledon debut.
Showers washed out play com
pletely yesterday for the first time
in two years, and the 30th time in
.113 years, giving Jim Courier
another 24 hours to figure out how
to avoid being beaten by Britain’s
Tim Henman.
Courier and Henman struck a
few balls, none in anger, between
cloudbursts, then retreated to the
lounge for an afternoon of
backgammon and video games —
though not with each other.
“They didn’t sit down and
have dinner, but they did say
hello,” David Felgate, Henman’s
coach, said. “It’s a small locker
room, and there are 16 guys in it.
There’s no running away from
each other.”
Henman led two sets to one,
and 4-3 with Courier to serve in
the fourth set of a match that
began Monday and will resume,
weather permitting, today.
Stevenson, an effervescent 18-
year-old who is into the fourth
round as a newly turned pro,
showed off her singing talents for
the BBC with a show tune while
she waited in vain to play fellow
American Lisa Raymond.
Steffi Graf also remained on
hold, two games
rc
GRAF
from victory at 6-
2, 4-2 against
Belgian qualifier
Kim Clusters.
So far the only
players to reach
the quarterfinals
are Andre Agassi
and Gustavo
Kuerten, who
will play each other on the men’s
side, and defending champion
Jana Novotna and Lindsay
Davenport, who will meet on the
women’s side.
The backup in the schedule
means a lot of tennis will have to
be crammed into the short span of
the rest of the week. If the fourth
round can be completed today —
and the weather forecast is not
encouraging — then the quarterfi
nals likely would be held for both
draws on Thursday, instead of
being broken up as usual over two
days.
That would result in the men’s

LUBBOCK (AP) — A jury awarded Dallas
Cowboys cornerback Zebbie Lethridge $22.5 mil
lion yesterday in his lawsuit against a Dillard’s
department store and a security guard.
Jurors in the 364th District Court made the
decision, which stems
from a 1995 incident in
which Lethridge and two
of his friends were
accused of stealing a pair)
of earrings from a
Lubbock Dillard’s store.
Lethridge, who starred for
four years as a quarter
back at Texas Tech University, was still with the
Red Raiders at the time.
After the 24-year-old was found innocent of the
charge in Lubbock Municipal Court, he filed a civil
suit against Dillard’s and security guard Tom
Robison. In the suit, Lethridge and his attorney
claimed the store accused him of shopliftingtfj ve
because he is black. H flEhistoi
Lethridge did not return a phone call froral
Associated Press last night. j
His mother, Velda Lethridge, said hersoncf
nally asked for only $1 million in damages. I
though the jury awarded over 22 times
amount, Lethridge said she still thinks it was«
deserved.
“I think it’s long overdue because of
that was caused,” she said. “We wanted thisi
sion to be as big as the lie that was told. I thil
wonderful.”
Defense attorneys for Dillard’s said they^
appeal the decision.
Lethridge, who was moved to cornerback a f
signing with the Cowboys in 1998, spent mosto!
rookie season last year on the practice squad,
was not expected to challenge for any signific
playing time in 1999.

Davis, a 6-2 point guard from
UCLA, figures to be chosen no
lower than fourth.
Szczerbiak, a 6-7 forward,
should be chosen no lower than
fifth.
Aside from Krause’s maneu-
verings, another big draft uncer
tainty is the status of Lamar
Odom.
A 6-10 phenom from Rhode
Island who could play three posi
tions in the pros, Odom may
have hurt his stock by declaring
for the draft, then trying to pull
out.
He then missed several work
outs scheduled by NBA teams.
He was not on time for
Tuesday’s media availability ses
sion held by the NBA.
“Lamar is a great kid. I don’t
understand what’s going on. No
one does,’’ Szczerbiak said.
“He’s probably going through a
real tough time. He’s probably
[about] to snap.”
Rounding out the top-10 draft
slots are Minnesota, Washington,
Cleveland, Phoenix and Golden
State, who will likely be choosing
among Jonathan Bender of
Picayune High School in
Mississippi, guards Jason Terry of
Arizona, Richard Hamilton of
Connecticut, Andre Miller of Utah
and William Avery of Duke.
Lottery teams Cleveland,
Toronto and Seattle will choose
11th, 12th and 13th, and the rest
of the first round includes four
picks for Atlanta (Nos. 17, 20, 21
and 27) and three for Utah (19,
24 and 28).
“I’ve never seen a draft
where more people in the late
first round were willing to deal
their first-round picks,”
Wizards general manager Wes
Unseld said.
“Everybody’s just feeling each
other out, throwing a lot of stuff
against the wall, trying to see what
sticks. For me, it’s as thick as I’ve
seen it. I’m not getting a straight
answer from anyone. Maybe
because nobody has any.”
Chicago (Nos. 1 and 16),
Toronto (5 and 12), Cleveland (8
and 11) and Minnesota (6 and
14) have two picks apiece.
Dallas, New Jersey, Sacramento,
Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Detroit,
Orlando and Portland do not have
