Blink 182
Enema of the State
Fun With Goa ts Records
■hen the members of Blink 182 hit the big time
j ithltheir MTV-assisted smash, “Dammit,” they
ought with them a hardcore following, loyal to
eirnuvenile ways and hardcore pop/punk sound.
On the follow-up to their popular 1997 offering.
Ranch, Blink 182 defines themselves as the
lice of a new generation of pop fans who are
ediof all the teenybopper-recycling jobs radio
ations keep throwing at them.
E On tracks like the radio ready “What’s My Age,”
ey explore their appeal to the younger crowd and
iplain all they meant to do is have some fun and
'‘"’’Wt grow up like everyone* expects them to do.
' “Wendy Clear” is reminiscent of earlier works
,<e | Dammit.” And if you really want to experi-
ace the true vibe of the band, give a listen to
The Party Song. ”
The best thing about Enema of the State in com-
arison to their earlier albums is they have fo-
used more on their musicianship without com-
romising their humor..
Enema of the State r eally rocks and promises to
ive the listener an eairful of great melodies and
:ed ongue-in-cheek lyrics.. (Grade: B)

Kid Rock
Devil Without A Cause
Atlantic Records
Those who heard some of Kid Rock’s earlier
recordings like Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast and
were hoping for more of the same, then you are in
for both a pleasant and unpleasant surprise.
This time around Kid Rock is all about the unifi
cation of any and every musical genre around today.
He lays hip-hop vocals over hard hitting rock tracks
and the result is entertaining.
The first single off the album, “I Am The Bull-
god,” received little fanfare and was quickly forgot
ten, even though it is one of the better cuts from the
album.
However, Kid Rock really left his mark with the
follow-up single, “Bawitdaba.” The ensuing MTV
buzzworthy status of the video led to the fanfare
that now surrounds him.
Other tracks worth listening to are “Cowboy,”
“Gangster Rovin’” and the title track, “Devil Without
A Cause.”
With lyrics like “I ain’t straight outta
Compton/I’m straight out the trailer,” it is clear to
see that Kid Rock definitely wants to establish his
own identity within the rap world.Ultimately, this al
bum delivers the party straight to the listener.

King recovering
from real-life scare
LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — His
body is broken after being struck
by a van. But the mind that creat
ed best sellers like “Carrie,” “The
Shining,” and “Pet Sematary” is
intact, Stephen King’s office said
Monday.
King, who underwent surgery
Monday, faces major rehabilitation
over the next year.
In addition to fractures of his
right leg, King suffered a broken
hip, a collapsed lung and a cut on
his scalp.
His office took care to note his
serious injuries were from the
shoulders down.
“Mr. King’s mental state is
great,” his office said in a state
ment.
The best-selling horror writer re
mains in serious condition at Cen
tral Maine Medical Center.
King, 51, was thrown 14 feet
when he was hit from behind Sat
urday afternoon by a minivan as
he walked along the shoulder of a
road in rural Lovell, where he owns
a summer home.
The driver, Bryan Smith, 41,
lost control after being distracted
by his dog, which was loose inside
the minivan. Smith was not speed
ing and stopped immediately,
sheriff’s Deputy Matt Baker said.
“There’s nothing to charge him
with,” Baker said. “He wasn’t be
ing reckless. He was just dis
tracted.”
Baker said he does not know of
any state law requiring pets to be
secured in a moving vehicle. He
noted that King, technically, was
violating the law by walking in the
same direction as traffic.
The hospital has been deluged
with calls and e-mail messages
from King’s fans all over the world.
Several jokingly gave thanks
that King was not found by Anne
Wilkes, a character in his book
“Misery.” Wilkes finds, kidnaps
and tortures her favorite author af
ter he gets into an auto wreck.
