If the makers of Gorillas in the Mist and The Shawshank Redemption joined forces, they would not be able to sort through the mess the makers of Instinct have created. Hopkins plays primatologist Dr. Ethan Powell, a man who disappeared into the jungles of Africa while studying mountain gorillas two years ago. After brutally killing two Rwandan park guards, Powell is brought stateside to undergo a psychologi cal evaluation by the bright-eyed young Dr. Theo Caulder, played by the equally bright-eyed and young Gooding. The most depressing part of the movie isn’t its poor direction or its incoherent script, it’s watching an actor of Hopkins’ caliber wasting his talent on such pathetic material. No wonder the man wants to retire from acting. Hopkins gives an unmotivated performance to an unbelievably boring character. Gooding is borderline nauseating as the butt-kiss ing Caulder. The script is a shameless clone of The Shawshank Redemption, complete with rejoicing shots in the rain. What made Shawshank a triumph of the human spirit. Instinct turns into a stomach-churning run out of the theater. Director Jon Turteltaub is inept in his handling of the film. The movie jumps from a psychological thriller, to a story about animals, to a story about humanity with no fluidity or depth. It would be reassuring to say the reason Hopkins and Gooding chose to star in Instinct was a good script that was gutted in post-production, but from the moment the script reached their hands, they should have followed their instincts and thrown it in the trash.
