Nelson said running on the same
track so many times is not what
he had planned, but the meet
will hold the same purpose.
“We really wanted to run at
Houston because we’ve already
run at Texas a few times,” Nelson
said, “[but] this will still be a
very competitive meet.”
The non-scored meet will be
highlighted by fifth-ranked host
University of Texas, 16th-ranked
Houston and 19th-ranked
University of Oklahoma on the
men’s side.
The women’s meet will feature
national leader Texas, ninth-
ranked Brigham Young
University and 12th-ranked Texas
Tech University.
Nelson said this week will
bring rest for some athletes, most
notably sophomore hurdler Kris
Allen, while others will get an
opportunity to run after being off
last week.
“We’re coming off of a big
meet at the Penn Relays,”
Nelson said. “We’re resting some
of our guys, but we’re running
some of them, too.”
This weekend could offer some
fast times as the relay teams will
try to put everything together to
improve their qualifying times.
Nelson said the men’s 4x100-
meter relay team, which has found
a likely lead-off leg in freshman
Brandon Evans, is ready to pursue
a season best on Saturday.
“We’re hoping to run faster
than our 39.66 [second] time that
we’ve run,” Nelson said. “We’re
probably going to have to run a
little faster than that to get to the
NCAA [Championships].”
The meet will begin with field
events at 11 a.m., with running
events beginning at 1 p.m. and
continuing on a rolling schedule.

Jason Cox leads the Longhorns in batting aver
age with a .330 mark on the year. Steve Ontiveros
and Jason Moore hold the home run lead for Texas
with nine apiece.
The Longhorns send junior pitcher Dax Leone to
the hill for Friday’s game at Olsen Field. Leone is 6-
4 on the season with a 4.52 ERA and 62 strikeouts.
Saturday, Texas will throw out junior Scott
Dunn. With a record of 9-3 on the year, Dunn leads
the Longhorns with 73 strikeouts and a 4.79 ERA.
For Sunday’s final game, the Longhorns will
pitch junior D.J. Jones. Jones is 8-4 with 62 strike
outs and a team leading 4.26 ERA.
Johnson said Texas matches up well with the
Aggies, but the series comes down to one crucial
aspect.
“They’ve got some power hitters,” Johnson said.
“Ontiveros is really good. They’ve got quite a few
guys who can play. It really comes down to who
pitches well. If we can pitch well, then we’re going
to be all right.”
The first game of the series is Friday night at 7
at Olsen Field. The last two games are in Austin at
Disch-Falk Field. Saturday’s game starts at 6:30
p.m. while Sunday’s game, which will be televised
by Fox Sports Southwest, begins at 1 p.m.
Johnson said that playing at Disch-Falk is one of
the tougher places the Aggies will have to travel to
play.
“I think it’s similar to playing at Texas Tech,”
Johnson said. “Tech is a tough place to play.
Disch-Falk has always been tough. Both of them
are AstroTurf so there’s a newness there that we
have to adjust to. Plus their fans are like our
fans are with the opponents here. But we should
be fine because we’ve been down that road
before. ”
To make it tougher on the Aggies, both games in
Austin have been sold out. The sellouts are the
first of the season for the Longhorns and the first
since the 1995 season when the Aggies traveled to
Austin.
All reserve seats for Friday night’s game at Olsen
Field are sold out. Nearly 3,200 tickets and student
admissions will go on sale, and the gates will open
two hours prior to the game.
