Baez, Raitt help
celebrate Earth
Day atop tree
STAFFORD, Calif. (AP) — Joan
Baez and Bonnie Raitt were hoist
ed up a 180-foot
redwood to honor
an environmental
activist who has
lived atop the tree
for more than a
year.
The two
singers climbed a
steep, two-mile RA|TT
mountain on April
22 — Earth Day — and reached Ju
lia “Butterfly” Hill’s plywood perch
with the help of a pulley system.
The singers serenaded Hill, and
she responded by reading a poem
she wrote about snow.
They chatted for about 30 min
utes as a filmmaker preserved the
meeting on video.
“To experience Julia’s commit
ment and love for these forests in
person was a life-changing event,”
Raitt said. “She was literally shin
ing.”
Baez added, “Visiting Julia But
terfly was one of the most remark
able experiences of my life.”
Hill has lived atop the ancient
tree for nearly ! 1/2 years without
touching the ground to protest log
ging of ancient redwood trees 250
miles north of San Francisco.
Richard Gere sees
first-hand account
of refugee camp
BRAZDA, Macedonia (AP) — A
refugee got an autograph Wednes
day and Richard Gere got a first
hand look at a camp holding ethnic
Albanians driven from Kosovo.
The actor, known for his support
of Tibet’s struggle against China,
plans to spend three days in Mace
donia talking with relief officials and
visiting some of the places where
more than 135,000 people have
taken refuge since last month.
“I support many humanitarian
causes. I’m just trying to find out
what’s happening for myself,” Gere
said after a brief stop in the largest
refugee camp, about six miles
north of Skopje. “If there’s anyway
to help then I’ll do it.”
He chatted with a refugee
named Skender, who received an
autograph and became Gere’s un
official interpreter.
“What is the biggest problem
here? Food, water?” Gere asked.
“Lots of mud,” Skender said.

Donny and Marie
become new Miss
America hosts
LOS ANGELES (AP) — There
they are: new Miss America hosts
Donny and Marie Osmond.
The brother and sister act will re
place last year’s hosts, Boomer Es-
iason and Meredith Vieira, pageant
officials said Tuesday.
The Osmonds, popular TV and
concert performers in the ’70s and
’80s, reunited last fall for a syndi
cated talk show.
The pageant has had a rapid
turnover of hosts following Bert
Parks’ quarter-century reign, which
ended in 1980.
Parks was best known for sere
nading Miss America winners with
‘the trademark anthem, “There She
Is.” He died of lung cancer in 1992
at age 77.
The 79th annual Miss America
Pageant, dubbed Miss America
2000, will be broadcast live from At
lantic City, N.J., on ABC on Sept.
18.

ursLffi ]. How did you become interested in SLC
d* auk
r^Blard: I actually passed on it the first time 1
carry Ji/w it. 1 thought it was kind of interesting, but
. 'asr’t sure it was really something I wanted to
; ULUR0 omnd I might have been a little apprehensive
x>ut carrying a film.
But then I talked to the producers, then I met
Bs (director James Merendino), and within
ve minutes, I was set.2. What did you think of
E: tevo?
plaidw/Eljllard: He’s great. I mean, you do have these
indffeC
a —
beliefs as a young person that you live and die
on. Do you sell out, do you buy in? It’s a constant
struggle.
As an actor, it’s the same thing. Do you do the
commercials, the TV shows, just hoping for a
paycheck? Or do you wait it out and do the things
you really want to do?
3. Stevo’s dad gave him a lot of pressure to
give up his life as a punk and head to Harvard.
Were you ever pressured to pursue a different
path?
Lillard: I don’t think anyone else ever tried to
talk me out of acting, but I myself didn’t even ac
cept the fact I could become a professional actor
until I was 19. I’d been doing it all though school,
but I really considered it just a hobby.
Theater was the only place that being funny
was OK, that I didn’t get in trouble. I could be a
big clown if I wanted to.
4. Have you been targeting roles as the off
beat, quirky guy? Or are those the parts that
come to you?
Lillard: I definitely went out looking for them
in the beginning. I mean, I play big energy. In the
beginning, that’s what I was drawn to, and now
people seek me out to play the kind of crazy guy.
5. I checked you out on the Internet, and
you have a ton of fan pages. But on one, some
teen-age girl called you a “second-banana
hunk.” How do you feel about that?
Lillard: Second-banana hunk? Wow. What
does that mean? Well, it’s nice to be considered
a hunk at all.
Over time, maybe I can look forward to be
ing considered less of a second banana and be
come more of a first-banana hunk.
