In the zone MLB teams asked to chart amps’ calls NEW YORK (AP) — Major league umpires are angry over baseball’s new directive asking teams to chart pitches and file a report about strike zones. “It’s nonsensical when you look at it,” Richie Phillips, head of the umpires’ union, told the New York Post. “It’s juvenile. It’s just another case of Big Brother watching over us.” The umpires perceive the directive as an attempt to under mine their authority, the newspaper said Tuesday. “I don’t think the commission er’s office has the right to unilat erally impose an evaluation sys tem on umpires,” Pat Campbell, associate counsel for the major league umpires, told the Associated Press. “They have to negotiate with us first. “They’re using club personnel to do this. That seems very inef fective to me.” Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of the Office of the Commissioner, sent a letter to all teams earlier this month, asking that a high-ranking, front-office official chart pitches, then file a report at the end of each homes- tand. Alderson’s memo said the directive’s “pur pose is to stay on top of trends and provide as much feedback as possi ble to the league presidents and umpire supervisors.” In a Feb. 19 memo, Alderson told umpires to raise the top of the strike zone to 2 inches above the top of the uniform pants, still below the definition called for in the official playing rules: the mid point between the top of the shoul ders and the top of the pants. 7 don’t think the commissioner’s office has the right to ... impose an evaluation system/’ — Pat Campbell Associate counsel for Major League umpires NHL playoffs marred by racism accusation PHILADELPHIA (AP) — It is easy to see that the NHL is not a place for the faint of heart. The best players will do anything to get an edge — bite, spit, snort, and yes, unleash insults that can be personal and sometimes dis gusting. Bob Clarke heard it all during his Hall of Fame career. Now Sandy McCarthy, one of Clarke’s players on the Philadelphia Flyers, is accusing Toronto’s Tie Domi of using a racial slur about his black her itage in a playoff game. The league began investigat ing the claim Tuesday, forced again to confront the dirty secret that threatens to damage the sport’s image right in the middle of the Stanley Cup playoffs. “Unless you’re a black player like Sandy McCarthy, none of us can understand what calling a person that name does to you,” Clarke, the Flyers’ general man ager who was captain of their last Stanley Cup championship team in 1974, said. After trading shoves and words with Domi during the Maple Leafs’ 2-1 victory Monday night, McCarthy said the Toronto forward “dropped an N-bomb on me” during a heated exchange in the second period. Officials on the ice and players for both teams said they didn’t hear the slur. Domi denied using it, saying instead that McCarthy had spit in his face. “I would never use those kind oi words, and he knows that, Domi said. “He can say what he wants.” NHL supervisor John D’Amico contacted commissioner Gary Bettman and Colin Campbell, league disciplinarian, immediately after the game. McCarthy talked with league officials early Tuesday morning and after practice later in the day. Frank Brown, an NHL vice president, said the league was looking into the accusation and had no comment yet. WNBA, players seek deal League, union resume efforts to finalize agreement NEW YORK (AP) Negotiators for the WNBA and its players association returned to the bargaining table Tuesday in an effort to finalize their first collec tive bargaining agreement. The sides talked for eight hours Monday, trying to resolve differ ences which caused an apparent agreement to fall apart last week. At that time, both sides claimed the other had injected new terms at the last minute. The league postponed its player draft which had been scheduled for Tuesday, causing Pam Wheeler, executive director of the WNBA players association, to issue a statement charging league officials with trying to intimidate the players. Earlier, the union and league agreed on a four-year deal that would increase minimum salaries from $15,000 to $30,000 for veter ans and $25,000 for rookies. Those figures would increase to $40,000 and $30,000, respectively, by 2002. The benefits package was to include year-round health and dental benefits, pension, maternity benefits and life insurance.
