It was unexpected, however, that they would achieve the feat without two members of the reg ular lineup, senior Toya Jones and sophomore Kris Allen. Guest-starring for the Aggies were sophomore Bashir Ramzy and freshman Brandon Evans, who, along with mainstay seniors Michael Price and Billy Fobbs, led the team to victory in 40.28 seconds. A&M track and field coach Ted Nelson said he was impressed by the younger members’ performance. “I thought our young guys stepped up and did a good job,” he said. “This is the type of experience that will pay off down the road. “I thought Bashir and Brandon gave us a little bit of a lead after the first two legs, and then the old guys [Fobbs and Price] took over from there.” Though well off their season best of 39.66, the time is still a positive sign for the Aggies. Jones, A&M’s No. 2 100-meter entry, will return to the team after missing the relays because of a prior commitment to an NFL mini-camp. Allen, who was held out due to injury, should compete for the final spot on the relay with Ramzy and Evans. Nelson said the team’s best times will be seen after the relay order is sorted out. “We haven’t run our best race yet,” Nelson said. “We have the luxury of having pretty good depth in the [4X100], so it’s just a matter of finding out who our best four guys are.” Ramzy and Evans both had well-rounded perfor mances for the meet. Ramzy placed seventh in the final of the 110-meter high hurdles and finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 49 feet, 1 inch. Evans placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 49-5 3/4. The men’s 4x400-meter relay of seniors Price SALLIE TURNER/The Battalion A&M sophomore Desi Hudson runs the 110-meter hurdles at the Texas A&M Invitational on April 10. and Derrick Woods and juniors Travis McAshan and Johan Lannefors also performed well, clocking a provisional-qualifying time of 3:06.65 en route to a fourth-place finish. On the women’s side, freshman Robin Burkhardt placed fourth in the championship division of the high jump, clearing 5-10, while senior Detrich Clariett placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 41-08. Both squads will travel to Houston next week end to compete in the Mizuno Invitational May 1. Golf heads to Big 12 tourney BY TRAVIS HARSCH The Battalion Sometimes sports can be reduced to simple equations without worrying about games in the win column or margin of vic tory. The equa tion for the Texas A&M Men’s Golf Team this week is as simple as it gets — win and they are in. Despite strug gling for much of the season, the qualify for the Regional by winning the Big 12 tournament this weekend in Hutchinson, Kan. A&M coach Bob Ellis said his team has a chance. “If we can come in at the top of our game, we can win the championship and keep the year going,” Ellis said. “It should be a great tournament with some great teams.” The Aggies will face some tough competition for the title as four of their conference oppo nents are ranked among Golfweek’s top 25, with fifth- ranked Oklahoma State and No. 11 Texas considered the favorites to take home the trophy and No. 18 Nebraska and No. 24 Oklahoma not far behind. Last year, the Aggies surprised many by taking the opening- round lead with a team 306 despite wet, windy conditions. The Aggies could not keep up the pace on the second day, shooting 321, but followed up with a solid 302 to finish fifth. Junior Lee Reed recorded the highest finish for A&M last year, placing 15th. He was followed closely by teammate Ryan Palmer, who placed 19th, one stroke behind Reed. Oklahoma State University’s Hunter Haas, who won the individual competi tion, returns this year to defend his title. Joining Reed and Palmer on the course for the Aggies will be sophomore Casey Cronin, senior Matt Welch and freshman Sean Gilliland. Palmer and Reed are the only players for A&M who have played in a conference tour nament before. Palmer, who will be looking to make the all-confer ence team for the third time, comes in as one of the hottest players in the field with top-ten finishes in each of his last four outings. “Ryan struggled some in the fall, but he has had a great spring,” Ellis said. “One of his goals at the start of the year was to be an All- American, and he has shown why he should be recently.” The tournament will be played at Prairie Dunes Country Club on a par-70 course that has been ranked among the nation’s top 20 and in the top 50 in the world. The 54-hole tournament will open with 36 holes Monday and wrap up with 18 holes Tuesday. PALMER team can still NCAA Central Houston falls to Phoenix, 95-71 PHOENIX (AP) — Something about playing the Houston Rockets brings out the best in Jason Kidd. The Phoenix point guard had his sixth triple double of the season and second in his last three games against Houston as the Suns blew out the slumping Rockets 95-71 on Sunday. “He’s unbelievable,” said Suns guard Rex Chapman, who scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half. “We don’t want to play too many minutes without him.” It was a tough game for Kidd, but it did not show in his performance. He was late for warmups trying to decide if he could play through the flu. Then in the first quarter, Kidd was poked in the eye by Scottie Pippen, and he also turned his ankle. The worst of it happened in the third quarter when he slid into a courtside table. But Kidd still finished with 22 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. “I wasn’t planning on going, but I gave it a try to see how it felt,” said Kidd, who stayed in the game until he got his last rebound and came out with 1:33 remaining. “It was a big game for us, and the team played extremely well. Rex and everybody was knock ing down shots, so that made it a lot easier on me.” The Suns, who moved into sixth place in the Western Conference last week when they beat Utah and Minnesota lost to Seattle, put their stretch drive in high gear by winning for the eighth time in their last 11 games. Fourth-place Houston lost its third straight for the first time all season, and slipped to within a half-game of the idle Los Angeles Lakers. Cliff Robinson scored 15 points for the Suns, and Tom Gugliotta had 14 and nine rebounds. Pippen led the Rockets with 21 points, Hakeem Olajuwon had 16 and Charles Barkley had 13 points and 11 rebounds. “We’re fighting for home court in the first round of the playoffs and they’re fighting for like the No. 8 seed. I think I’d rather be in our situation,” Barkley said. Olajuwon thought the Rockets were still feeling the effects of a 14-point loss to Dallas last Wednesday that started the slide. “Since the big loss to Dallas, it’s gone downhill,” he said. “We just have to stop the bleeding and build it back up again.” The Suns led 53-36 at halftime — their biggest home margin this season after two quarters — but Pippen cut the Phoenix lead to 62-50 on a 3-point er with 6:35 left in the third period. Kidd left for the locker room for X-rays after div ing into the table with 1:30 to go. Pippen hit a jump hook 14 seconds later, and the Rockets were within 11 points, 70-59. Chapman, who had 10 points in the third quar ter, sank two 3-pointers in the first 1:19 of the fourth for a 78-61 lead. Houston never threatened again. 2080 E. 29th St„ Bryan 775-2463 $3.00 - all shows before 6 p.m. S3.00 - children/seniors S5.00 - Adults Schulman Theatres College Park 6 www.schulman-theatres.com Bcs online www.lockon.com NEVER BEEN KISSED OD (PG13) Now Showing - Today’s Times Only The Battalion Online offers access to The WIRE news from The Associated Press http://battalion.tamu.edu The WIRE provides continuously updated news cov erage from one of the world’s oldest, largest news services via The Battalion's web page. ■ A comprehensive, up-to-the-minule news report combining Ihe latesl AP stones with photos, graphics, sound and video. - Headlines and bulletins delivered as soon as news breaks. • U.S., World.
