(AP) — Former Kentucky football player Jason Watts was sentenced Tuesday to the maximum 10 years in prison for an alcohol-related truck crash that killed a teammate and another young man. Watts, who turned 22 Monday, has been in the Pulaski County Detention Center since March 31, when he pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and volunteered to start serving time immediately. Watts’ shoulders slumped when the judge sentenced him, and given a chance to address the court. Watts choked back tears as he said, “I want to say I’m sorry to all the people I let down.” Earlier Watts’ lawyer, James Lowry, had argued Watts’ willing ness to take responsibility for the deaths of his friends should merit a lighter sentence, if not probation. Commonwealth’s Attorney Eddy Montgomery said that while he appreciated Watts’ willingness to take responsibility, ‘‘as a prose cutor, I can’t look past the fact that two people have died.” Watts was immediately returned to jail, and Lowry did not make himself available to com ment. Watts’ father, mother and sister — who attended the sen tencing with Watts’ former team mate, Paul McGonagle — were in tears after the sentencing and declined to comment. The Nov. 15 crash on U.S. 27 north of Somerset injured Watts and killed teammate Arthur Steinmetz and Eastern Kentucky student Scott Brock. Watts was hospitalized for a week with an arm laceration, visi ble Tuesday when he was dressed in a blue jail jumpsuit. He was kicked off the football team and left school briefly before returning in January. The crash darkened Kentucky’s most successful football season in years, one that climaxed with an appearance in the Jan. 1 Outback Bowl. Watts, a senior from Oviedo, Fla., played a key role in the team’s success, anchoring a line that protected star quarter back Tim Couch. The Dance Arts Society presents... (AP) — The sister of women’s professional bas ketball player Kim Perrot has been stabbed to death and police have booked the woman’s roommate in the killing. Linette Perrot, a 36-year-old mother of nine, was stabbed in the back with a knife Saturday night, police said. She stum bled to the home of a neighbor, who called authorities. She died later that night, police said. Helena Francis, 34, was booked with second-degree murder. No bond has been set. Police said jeal ousy may have been the motive. A funeral was held Tuesday. Perrot’s brother, Craig, said the two women had a troubled rela tionship and the victim had packed all of her belongings a few weeks ago with a plan to move out. Perrot had nine chil dren, ranging in age from 7 to 17. They were not in her care at the time of her death, authorities said. Perrot’s sister, Kim, is a point guard for the WNBA’s Houston Comets. She recently had surgery to remove golf ball-size brain tumor and underwent radia tion treatment for smaller tumors. THIS YEAR A LOT OF COLLEGE SENIORS WILL BE GRADUATING INTO DEBT.
