Week challenges Americans
to become organ, tissue donors

BY ANDREA BROCKMAN

Four years ago, a Brazos Valley
man passed away. It was tragic for
his family members, but they
agreed to donate his organs. As a
result, the tragedy brought a mira
cle to seven people — the miracle
of life.
One of the organ recipients,
Steve Brunson, a supervisory staff
accountant and CPA in the Texas
A&M Fiscal Department, endured
a life-saving, double-lung trans
plant.
Brunson said a perfect match for
an organ usually happens once
every four or five months.
"My heart had stopped beating
twice that week, so I probably
wouldn’t have made it another four
or five months,” he said. "If that
man hadn't signed up to be an or
gan donor, I would be dead. I owe
him and his family my life.”
The National Kidney Founda
tion says 60,000 Americans are
awaiting transplants of life-saving
organs, and each month 2,000
more patients are added to the
waiting list. Ten to 11 people die
see Donors on Page 12.
