BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) —
Yugoslavia slammed shut the main
crossing point for ethnic Albanian
refugees fleeing Kosovo, leaving
uncertainty Monday about the fate
jof the tens of thousands whom aid
officials had believed were on their
way to the border.
NATO struck at a variety of sites
bn the 26th day of its air campaign,
reportedly including a government
building in Serbia’s second-largest
city and a television transmitter in
Kosovo. But it said its operations
were limited by poor weather.
Despite continuing defiance by
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milo
sevic and his military forces in
Kosovo, NATO’s chief spokesper
son expressed confidence the strat-
(egy will pay off.
“Since when was a dictator de
feated in 24 hours?” Jamie Shea
said at the NATO briefing in Brus
sels, Belgium. “It took six years to
defeat fascism in the middle of Eu
rope in the 20th century. I think we
can take two or three months to de
feat President Milosevic.”
The bombings aim to force Milo
sevic to accept a peace plan for
Kosovo, a province in Serbia, the
main republic in Yugoslavia. The
plan includes 28,000 NATO-led
troops to enforce it.
Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-Gen
eral Kofi Annan said Monday he
will go to Moscow next week to dis
cuss the Kosovo conflict. Yu
goslavia rejected the key element of
Annan’s Kosovo peace initiative
last week, saying an international
military force in Yugoslavia was un
acceptable.
Refugee traffic from Kosovo into
Albania, Macedonia and Montene
gro slowed to a trickle Monday. The
U.N. refugee agency said the Serbs
apparently were turning back the
refugees.
