Weekend warriors
Softball team falls to Oklahoma, splits series with OSU
BY JASON LINCOLN
The Battalion
It was a rough weekend for the
Texas A&M Softball Team, who
hosted a pair of double-headers
against two Oklahoma foes.
Saturday the Aggies fell to confer
ence leader University of
Oklahoma, 3-0, 6-4. Sunday also
started off ominously, as A&M
dropped the first game against
Oklahoma State University, 2-4,
but the Aggies were able to step
up in the second to split the series
with a 2-1 win.
“We needed that win [against
OSU],” A&M coach Jo Evans said.
“We put ourselves in the hole
early. I was surprised that we
came out flat and dropped that
first game. Our team has played
with a lot of intensity and we
expected to win [against OSU].”
In the first game of the week
end, the Aggies were able to keep
pace with the bats of the Sooners
as the two teams turned in six hits
each, but the OU field kept A&M
scoreless through seven innings.
The Aggies were on the way to
returning the favor when Sooner
center fielder Ashli Barrett drove
the pitch from sophomore Amy
Vining out of the park for a three-
run home run, the only runs of the
game. Pitcher Jenifer Stewart
recorded four strikeouts in a com
plete-game effort for OU, improv
ing her record to 17-2.
In the second game, OU found
its rhythm against Vining and
turned in five runs off 10 hits.
Sophomore Jordana Barrack came
in the game in the bottom of the
third to try to get the save for the
Aggies. Barrack gave up just two
hits for one run, but it was not
enough as the Sooners came away
with a 6-4 win.
Vining started her third game in

two days Sunday to start the series
against OSU. The Cowgirls went
up early, carrying a 1-0 lead into
the bottom of the seventh, but
sophomore Tiffany Esters stepped
up for the Aggies with a game-
tying home run.
“After getting out of the slump,
I got more confidence with every
at bat,” Esters said.
The game went into extra
innings, where both teams offense
struggled. The top of the 10th
brought about the tiebreaker rule,
by which the teams started the
inning with a runner on second.
That was all the Cowgirls needed to
jump out to a 4-1 lead. A&M was
able to score just one run to answer
and dropped the game, 4-2.
Vining went nine innings
against the Cowgirls before being
relieved by junior Danielle Lemuth.
Vining’s record drops to 19-11.
The Aggie bats had their share
of trouble in the second game
against OSU, as they were held to
six hits compared to the Cowgirls’
eighth. The game was tied going
into the bottom of the seventh,
threatening yet another extra
innings game, but this time it was
Aggie junior Stephanie Trumbull
who stepped up, hitting a long shot
to center in a bases-loaded situa
tion to bring in the winning run.
“I just wanted to help the team
win,” Trumbull said about the
game-winning RBI. “[The game]
was tough, but this will be a boost
going into the road games.”
The Aggies will host their last
home game of the season
Wednesday against Sam Houston
State University before hitting the
road to finish the Big 12 season
with four doubleheaders in two
weekends.
