BOOK YOUR TICKETS ON-LINE www.statravel.com Aggies to host Oklahoma foes Weekend games hold title implications for A&M Softball Team BY BEN WESTBROOK The Battalion This weekend, two teams from Oklahoma will visit Aggieland to play the 19th-ranked Texas A&M Softball Team in a pair of double- headers at the Aggie Softball Complex Saturday and Sunday. The games will play a vital role in determining the Big 12 Champion of the 1999 softball season. “These are huge games for us,” A&M softball coach Jo Evans said. “We have three weeks left in the season, and we need to start mak ing a push.” The University of Oklahoma Sooners kick off the action Saturday with a doubleheader at noon. The eighth-ranked and Big 12-leading Sooners are led at the plate by senior first baseman Lynette Velazquez, who is hitting .412 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs. Oklahoma as a team is outhit- ting their opponents .297 to .203. “Oklahoma is a great hitting team,” Evans said. “Velasquez is one of the leading home-run hit ters in the conference.” Covering the duties on the mound for OU will most likely be Jennifer Stewart, who leads the Sooners with a 1.32 earned run average and 16 wins. Using a good knuckleball, Stewart has held opposing teams to a .175 batting average. The freshman reached the apex of pitching last Sunday with a perfect game against Iowa State University. Evans said the Aggies will have to match the Sooners’ offensive prowess if they hope to win. “Oklahoma is very athletic. They play good defense and hit the ball very well,” Evans said. “The key for us [to beat them] is we have to hit the ball with them.” After Saturday’s doubleheader, the Aggies will return Sunday to face Oklahoma State University. MIKE FUENTES/The Battalion A&M junior shortstop Jamie Smith dives to make the stop during the Aggies’ game against Southwest Texas State University Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex. The OSU Cowboys are having an uncharacteristically bad season this year with 15 wins and 17 loss es and a 1-3 Big 12 record. Jamie Foutch is the leader at the plate for the Cowboys with a .412 batting average, 22 RBIs and a .496 on-base percentage. OSU’s Sara Knife Chief and Sheryl Anderson double up as the likely pitching prospects for this weekend’s matchup. The two boast a 2.09 ERA and 3.10 ERA respectively and have combined for 12 of the Cowboys 15 wins this season. Evans said the Aggies have to look beyond the Cowboys’ recent struggles. “OSU has struggled early on, but they’re great traditionally,” Evans said. “They’re always a well-coached team.” The Aggies need this weekend to go well. The women have fall en to 3-3 in the Big 12 and are stuck with three other teams at .500. The women will be looking to freshman Lisa Klam to provide a spark at the plate. Klam, who is a strong contender for Freshman of the Year, is leading the team in batting average (.386), hits (54) and home runs (10). Sophomore Tiffany Esters also has taken over the duty of getting runs across the plate with a team leading 29 RBIs. Sophomore Amy Vining will most likely see plenty of time on the mound this weekend. Vining is leading the Big 12 with a 0.73 ERA and has posted a 18-9 record for the year. Freshman Jordana Barrack is the other probable pitcher for A&M with a 1.86 ERA and 11 wins. The weekend marks the last Big 12 games to be played at the Aggie Softball Complex this year. The women wrap up home action with a game against Sam Houston State University on Wednesday.
