fallen to fifth in the Big 12 Confer
ence at 3-3 in Big 12 play, 33-10
overall.
SWTSU is one game over .500
with a 26-25 record on the season,
including an 8-16 record on the
road. The Bobcats’ last two victo
ries were 1-0 shutouts against
Georgia Southern University last
Saturday in San Marcos. The Ag
gies contributed to the Bobcats’
loss column earlier this year in the
UTA/PepsiCola Intercollegiate
Championships with a 1-0 win
over Southwest Texas.
“They played us really tough [at
the tournament],” A&M coach Jo
Evans said. “They’ve lost some
games this year they probably
should’ve won.”
The Bobcats will probably
throw pitcher Amber Mosher at the
Aggies. The freshman lefthander
has taken over the ace role for the
Bobcats with an 18-16 record and
a 2.06 earned-run average. Mosh
er doubles up as a formidable pres
ence at the plate with a .308 bat
ting average.
The Bobcats as a team are out-
hitting their opponents, .267 to
.243, on the year and are led at the
plate by freshman utility player
Perri Yarbrough, who posts a .314
batting average.
Handling the pitching duties for
the Aggies will most likely be
sophomore ace Amy Vining. The

Women’s Golf Team places
fifth in weekend tourney
BY TRAVIS HARSCH
The Battalion
It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. The
Texas A&M’s Women’s Golf Team learned that lesson
this weekend, as they finished fifth in the Susie
Maxwell Berning Classic at the University of Okla
homa’s Jimmie Austin Golf Course.
With a strong start on the front nine in the final
round of play, the Aggies had an opportunity to catch
tournament host and second-round leader Oklahoma;
the Sooners had a 14-stroke lead on the Aggies going
into the final round.
But A&M ran into difficulty on the back nine, fin
ishing with a total of 318 on the day and a score of 939
for the tournament, tying the Aggies with Texas-El
Paso for the fifth team spot. Oklahoma took the team
title with a score of 923 on their home course.
“We started off well and made the turn in decent
shape,” A&M coach Jeanne Sutherland said. “But the
ground we made up on the front nine we gave back
on the back nine. Obviously, it was not the result we
were looking for.”
Anna Jonsson made a strong comeback for the Ag
gies after missing the two previous tournaments with
a back injury; she led the Aggies with 79-75-80 = 234
and tied for 14th place, 15 shots behind champion
Wendy Martin of Oklahoma.
Anna Becker shot 235 to finish in a tie for 18th,
Marta Ostos tied for 30th with 238, MacKenzie Dyslin
tied for 36th by shooting a 239 and a 240 score put
Mimi Epps in a tie for 38th.
The tournament was the final one for the Aggies
before they head to Boulder, Colo., next Monday
through Wednesday to defend their Big 12 title at
Boulder Country Club. Following the conference tour
nament, the Aggies will host the NCAA West Region
al at Pine Forest Country Club in Houston, May 6r8.

Freshman Jennifer Cates sinks a putt at the GTE
“Mo” Morial Tournament. The Aggies finished fifth
this weekend at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.
Madden named as
Player of the Week
Texas A&M sophomore Shuon
Madden was named the Big 12
Conference Men’s Tennis Player of
the Week for the week ending April
11.
SPORTS IN BRIEF
Madden, who is ranked No. 34
nationally by the Intercollegiate Ten
nis Association, recorded a perfect
3-0 record last week in dual-match
play for the Aggies.
This marks the third time in two
seasons that Madden has earned
the player of the week honor for the
conference. Last year, he earned
the honor in back-to-back weeks in
the heart of the season.
Madden holds a 22-7 overall
record and a 6-0 mark in the Big 12
Conference at No. 1 singles. He is
ranked No. 1 nationally in doubles
with teammate Dumitru Caradima
