The Texas A&M’s Women’s Golf Team learned that lesson this weekend, as they finished fifth in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the University of Okla homa’s Jimmie Austin Golf Course. With a strong start on the front nine in the final round of play, the Aggies had an opportunity to catch tournament host and second-round leader Oklahoma; the Sooners had a 14-stroke lead on the Aggies going into the final round. But A&M ran into difficulty on the back nine, fin ishing with a total of 318 on the day and a score of 939 for the tournament, tying the Aggies with Texas-El Paso for the fifth team spot. Oklahoma took the team title with a score of 923 on their home course. “We started off well and made the turn in decent shape,” A&M coach Jeanne Sutherland said. “But the ground we made up on the front nine we gave back on the back nine. Obviously, it was not the result we were looking for.” Anna Jonsson made a strong comeback for the Ag gies after missing the two previous tournaments with a back injury; she led the Aggies with 79-75-80 = 234 and tied for 14th place, 15 shots behind champion Wendy Martin of Oklahoma. Anna Becker shot 235 to finish in a tie for 18th, Marta Ostos tied for 30th with 238, MacKenzie Dyslin tied for 36th by shooting a 239 and a 240 score put Mimi Epps in a tie for 38th. The tournament was the final one for the Aggies before they head to Boulder, Colo., next Monday through Wednesday to defend their Big 12 title at Boulder Country Club. Following the conference tour nament, the Aggies will host the NCAA West Region al at Pine Forest Country Club in Houston, May 6r8. JP BEATO/The Battalion Freshman Jennifer Cates sinks a putt at the GTE “Mo” Morial Tournament. The Aggies finished fifth this weekend at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.
