DALLAS (AP) — A Smith Coun
ty commissioner's advice to rural
residents plagued by stray dogs has
come back to bite him.
Derrell Cooper has told residents
to shoot the animals or leave out a
bowl of antifreeze so they can lap
up the poison and die.
“If 1 go to my mailbox and a dog
makes me get in my car, he won’t
do it but once,” Cooper said at a
meeting Monday in Tyler.
His comments have angered oth
er county leaders, residents and an
imal rights groups. They believe the
county should hire animal control
officers to humanely round up the
thousands of stray dogs and cats
that roam the countryside.
About 45 residents of the East
Texas county gathered at the com
missioners’ meeting Monday to ask
for help with the stray dog problem.
Few expected Cooper’s remarks,
which prompted gasps and angry
responses, said Gayle Helms, exec
utive director of the Smith County
Humane Society.
"To me, that was:!
