JEWEL 10 Things I Hate About You Starring Laura Oleynik and Julia Stiles Directed by Gil Junger Playing at Hollywood 1 6 I Finally, a teen flick in which the cast actually looks kethey belong in high school! I 10 Things I Hate About You, a modern day version ^■akespeare's classic “Taming of the Shrew,” tells lelale of Kat and Bianca Stratford, two teen sisters their way through high school. | Popular Bianca (Oleynik) is not allowed to date un- older, beautiful but tempestuous sistei Kat pltiles) does. ^When Bianca’s latest admirer plots to fix Kat up fith the local outcast, the trouble begins. Stiles and Oleynik bring a measure of emotional pth to their sisterly relationship, an unusual element Ipsiich a teen flick and Joseph Gordon-Levitt does an cellent job playing Bianca’s love-struck suitor, as ell as actually looking 17-years-old. The best thing about 10 Things I Hate About You is cast’s ability to take themselves too seriously, mak- glthem inherently believable as a group of high :hoolers. ©f the three teen flicks in the past three months in- )l|ing some type of bet or payment to date or mate lelundatable girl, this is undoubtedly the funniest, irector Gil Junger does an excellent job of bring- hakespeare to high school, and although some cts of the movie lack realism, for example, Pradua ligfi is apparently a Renaissance castle located in the pile suburbs, 10 Things I Hate About You retains a ; wicked attitude that will keep audiences snick- iring to the end. (Grade: B +) — Susan Overcash The Out-of-Tow tiers Starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn Directed by Sam Weisman Playing at Hollywood 16 and College Park 6 Somewhere in the update of The Out-of-Towners, originally filmed in 1970 with a screenplay by Neil Si mon, the story became unfunny. There is nothing par ticularly wrong with the film other than this. Too bad it is a comedy. Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn reprise the roles of Henry and Nancy Clark, originally played by Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis. The Clarks are stereotypi cal Midwesterners, from Ohio to be precise, an area of the country where life is easier and less taxing, or so movies tell us. The Clark’s children have recently left home and Henry lost his job, something his wife does not know, so he must go to a job interview in New York. Unfortunately, New York City is not nice to the Clarks. The hi-jinks of the movie are designed to let Martin and Hawn exude their comedic talents. However, the screenwriter apparently did not exude talent his own. One pratfall follows the next and all Martin and Hawn do is wave their arms and attempt to make slapstick funny. It does not work. At least John Cleese is amusing as the hotel manag er where the Clarks are trying to stay. Cleese, the for mer ringleader of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, takes condescension to a new level. His role is basical ly a reprisal of Basil Fawlty, although he is much meaner in this latest incarnation. It is not his fault the rest of the film fails. (Grade: D) — Jeff Schmidt Woodstock ’99 performances aim to appeal to new crowd NEW YORK (AP) — Wood- stock ’99 will be busting with bands appealing to an audience that was not even born when the original concert took place 30 years ago. The Dave Matthews Band, Jewel, Metallica and Alanis Morissette are among those ap pearing at the three-day Wood- stock ’99 festival. Organizers expect about 250,000 people. “Three more days of mud, noise and logistical night mares?” said Metallica drum mer Lars Ulrich. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” The festival is scheduled for July 23-25 at Griffiss Park, an aban doned Air Force base about 50 miles west of Al bany. Ticket sales begin April 18. The show will also feature Korn, Limp Bizkit, Fatboy Slim, Sugar Ray, Creed, Counting Crows, Rage Against the Ma chine, Rusted Root, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, George Clin ton and Willie Nelson. None of the acts that played the original Woodstock, held in Bethel in 1969, were among the performers for the latest show. Six acts that played the 25- year anniver sary concert, which drew an estimated 350,000 people to Saugerties, N.Y., are coming back: Metalli ca, Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sheryl Crow, Live and Collective Soul. Organizers also promise bet ter security than at the first two Woodstocks, which were over run by gatecrashers. “This place is a fortress,” said promoter John Scher of Metropolitan Entertainment. “It’s about as hard to get into as it is to get out of a prison.” MORISSETTE IUDS/SpecmlTo tiphen Lair) 3 ^ 1 (part in 3 P |j !'; meet peoP le ® te side," W*' lights aw# : ih just reh# jlgot to m# ilentsand 0 3 the MSt H Iteservations.® > THE PRINCETON REVIEW reasons you should prepare with our LSAT course CONVENIENT SCHEDULES AND LOCATION With three different schedules to choose from, and our office location near Bullwinkle's, our LSAT course is the most convenient available.
