What is The Matrix 7 . This past
weekend thousands flocked to the
theaters to find out. Not counting
the Star Wars trailer and Wing
Commander, The Matrix is the
first sci-fi offering of the year.
Directed by the Wachowski
brothers, former writers for Mar
vel comics and directors of the
1996 independent hit Bound, the
two combined elements from
many forms of underground cul
ture to create The Matrix.
The film also boasts an excel
lent soundtrack that complements
the movie perfectly and adds to
the overall feeling, a rarity for film
soundtracks which rely on popu
lar artists.
Actually, the soundtrack is more
of a personal compilation, by the
Wachowski brothers, of cool tunes
since about only half the songs ap
pear in the movie. The soundtrack
has older tunes from Rage Against
the Machine, Deftones, Monster
Magnet and Rammstein as well as
newer ones from Marilyn Manson,
Ministry and Propellerheads.
Lesser known acts like Rob D,
Meat Beat Manifesto, Lunatic
Calm and Hive have some of the
best tracks on the album. The
Matrix soundtrack is a great al
bum by itself, and the songs add
to the film in general, making the
entire movie a cool experience.

CMT has made another at
tempt to market albums com
piled from recent work by al
ready established country artists.
Each compilation produced
offers nothing more than the
same songs overplayed on their
television network.
Rarely does CMT offer any
thing original or on the edge of
country music.
Featured on this album are
singers Sara Evans, Martina
McBride, Mindy McCready and
Lorrie Morgan. Not to underesti
mate the ability of these women
— it can be said their talents are
great. The problem with Girl’s
Night Out is the inability of the
producers to choose any of their
lesser-known work that has not
been featured on the CMT top
ten countdown in the past three
years.
The vocal ability of each of
these ladies is immense, and
some of their less-known work
deserves a chance to be spot
lighted in project like this.
It seems as though those in
charge of the final product were
more interested in the ladies
looking good for a cover shoot.
If producers had spent as
much time selecting music as
they had doing the artists make
up, the effort would have been
more worthwhile. (Grade: C-)
