Omar Capps, Claire Danes and Giovanni Ribisi star in The Mob Squad.
The Mod Squad
Starring Claire Danes
and Giovanni Ribisi
Directed by Scott Silver
Playing at Hollywood 1 6
With hip attitudes and nothing
but haunting 60’s-70’s sitcom mu
sic to back up the new members
of The Mod Squad (originally an
Aaron Spelling TV show), the
movie falls short in developing the
characters and their chemistry.
Pete (Ribisi), Line (Omar Epps)
and Julie (Danes) were all headed
to a life in prison. Fortunately for
them, the police wanted a group
of young, street-smart teenagers to
help with undercover work. With
some strict regulations and the
threat of prison over their heads,
the three musketeers become “po
licemen” and are nothing but a
joke at the station.
The makers of the film never
quite figured out what genre to
place the movie. Many thirty-year-
old styles may be coming back,
but who wants to see a replica of
the original show? (Grade: C +)

McConaughey and

Ron Howard

— Jeff Kempf
The movie opens looking all
too familiar (The Thmum Show),
but manages to find its own iden
tity with tile help of "EOtv” cre
ator Cynthia Topping (Ellen De-
Generes, whose comedy is
always based on sarcasm, which
works well in a movie that is tak
ing a stab at society as a whole).
Topping has her legions at a cable
channel “TVue TV”as they search
for the best candidate to star in a
marathon show based solely on
the individuals daily routine —
the winner, thirty-one-year-old Ed
Pekurny (McConaughey), a faith
ful video store clerk.
Typically, McConaughey can
be overbearing and irritating,
but somehow, he managed to
pull off this role very well and
gave away the irritating award to
costar Harrelson.
