Aggies face best in Arizoii
Women’s Golf Team to compete in Ping/ASU Invita
BY TRAVIS HARSCH
The Battalion
To be the best, a team has to play the best, and that
is just what the Texas A&M Women’s Golf Team will
do this weekend in the Ping/Arizona State University
Invitational.
The field of 17 teams boasts seven of the nation’s top
eight teams, including No. 1 Duke and No. 2 Arizona, and
has 12 of the top 20 teams. The 37th-ranked Aggies will
have to play shorthanded, however, as freshman Anna
Jonsson will miss the tournament with a back injury that
forced her to withdraw after the first round of the Lady
Gamecock Classic March 20.
Jonsson’s injury came at a time when she seemed
to be heating up, coming off consecutive wins in the
GTE “Mo”Morial at Pebble Creek Country Club and
the LSU/Fairwood Invitational. Without her. A&M fin
ished 13th in the South Carolina tournament before it
was cut to two rounds due to inclement weather, card
ing rounds of 322-323 = 645.
A&M will tee off from the No. 10 tee on the par-72
6,090-yard Karsten Golf Course in Tbmpe, Ariz. Thursday,
Friday and Saturday, playing 18 holes each day for a to
tal of 54.
Last year in this tournament, the Aggies finished eighth
in a 16-team field with a 916 total, 44 strokes behind tour
nament champion Stanford. The event was marred by a
back injury to junior Anna Becker, who opened the tour
nament with a 74, but was forced to withdraw with a
strained back muscle that would affect her for the dura
tion of the season.
Becker’s 77.59 stroke average, second on the team, has
finished in the top 15 in three of this year’s spring tour
naments. Also competing for the Aggies will be freshman
Mackenzie Dyslin, sophomore Marta Ostos, sophomore
Mimi Epps and freshman Jennifer Poth. Dyslin tied for
24th at the Lady Gamecock Classic, the best finish of her
career and Poth will be teeing up in only her fourth col
lege tournament.

(AP) — Don’t count on Michael
Jordan owning a piece of the NBA’s
Charlotte Hornets and playing for
them, too.
It would be against NBA rules, it
might tarnish his place in history,
and it would involve him bouncing
a basketball again — something he
says he is finished doing.
That was the reaction Wednes
day from the league, Jordan’s agent
and one of his close friends follow
ing reports he was considering
coming out of retirement to play for
the Hornets next season if he is suc
cessful in purchasing a share of the
team.
‘‘There’s absolutely no truth to
it,” agent David Falk said..
