Herbal remedies and medications are a
new trend that claim to relieve various ail
ments including insomnia, arthritis, pain,
fatigue and respiratory problems using all
natural ingredients.
Dr. Jane Cohen, assistant health educa
tion coordinator of A.P. Beutel Health Cen
ter, will provide information about herbal
remedies in order to help students make in
formed decisions when using natural reme
dies today at 5:30 p.m. in room 281 of the
Student Recreation Center.
Cohen’s lecture will be part of the
Healthy Living Lecture Series sponsored by
the Department of Recreational Sports.
Cohen said people use herbal medications
for cultural and religious reasons. Also, peo
ple believe an all-natural alternative may be
healthier than a prescription drug.
“There are also some people that believe
any pill approved by the Federal Drug Ad
ministration (FDA) is completely safe,” she
said.
Cohen will identify herbs used to man
ufacture over-the-counter remedies. Some
of the herbs she will discuss include Mah-
gang, Echinaccea and St. John’s Wort.
Cohen said she will address quality con
trol and safety when taking medications.
“Students need to be aware of possible
risks that can occur when medicines inter
act in the system and also the possibility of
allergic reactions,” she said.
Cohen will also talk about aromathera
py and natural seasonings. Plants, aro
matherapy products and seasonings will be
given away as door prizes.
“We will offer recommendations for us
age and also information on the side effects
of these herbal remedies,” Cohen said.
“We also will recommend discussing op
tions with a health care professional before
self diagnosing an illness.”
Cohen said a handout will be available
with Web sites that offer additional infor
mation concerning herbal remedies and
medications.
“The population is examining their op
tions when it comes to treatment, and we
want to give them information so they can
make informed decisions,” Cohen said.

Leader says Yugoslavia ready to fight to d

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP)
— Yugoslav leader Slobodan
Milosevic insisted Thesday that
NATO attacks stop before he
moves toward peace, declaring
his forces ready to fight “to the
very end.” NATO answered with
new resolve to wreck his mili
tary with a relentless air assault.
More than six hours of talks
with Russia’s prime minister
yielded a statement by Milose
vic that he was willing to rein in
a harsh campaign against ethnic
Albanians in Kosovo and re
sume peace talks if the NATO
strikes stopped.
His proposal was rejected by
NATO leaders including Presi
dent Clinton, who warned that
atrocities against ethnic Albani
ans would weaken Serbia’s
claim to the separatist province
and increase NATO’s determi
nation to destroy Milosevic’s
army.
