Dr. Arnold Krammer, a history professor at Texas A&M, said it is im portant for students to learn from people who experienced the parts of history they learn about. “There’s no better way to learn history than to talk to the people who were there,” he said. Wachsberg said effects were im mediately felt in Poland during the the beginning of World War II, with planes flying over and casualties oc curring within the first few hours of the war. Wachsberg said Jewish people began evacuating their homes with in the first two days of fighting, but they were overrun by the Germans and forced to return. Wachsberg said, as the first atrocities of the war began, Polish people were required to work for the Germans and chil dren were not allowed to attend school. Wachsberg was taken to a con centration camp at age 14 and even tually passed through 11 camps. Wachsberg said there was a total of 9,000 concentration camps during the war, and they varied in terms of living conditions. He said some pro vided decent sanitary conditions, but the poor sanitation of other camps caused outbreaks of typhus and dysentery.
