Elmer Schneider, assistant di
rector of University Police Depart
ment, said the yellow bikes are
considered University and state
property and those who damage
them will be penalized.
He said people who vandalize
bikes will be charged with criminal
mischief, which would fall under the
category of a class B or C misde
meanor and could result in up to
$2,000 in fines and 180 days in jail,
depending on the amount of damage.
Pichakron said if the situation
does not improve within the next
year, the program will probably be
terminated.
Yell leaders
voice spirit
BY LISA K. HILL
The Battalion
Eight candidates for junior yell
leader and six candidates for se
nior yell leader spoke yesterday in
the MSC Flagroom about unity,
spirit and responsibility in repre
senting Texas A&M.
Brittany Eck, programs director
for the Student Government Asso
ciation election commission,
helped organize the forum and
was pleased with the student
turnout.
“We planned the forum during
lunchtime to catch the crowds,”
she said. “Usually the crowd con
sists mostly of campaign mem
bers; I was glad to see more stu
dents not on campaign teams
interested in the elections.”
Eighty students watched and
listened as candidates sang,
danced and told OF Army stories
to raise crowd interest.
Eck said candidates for junior
and senior yell leader must meet
certain standards to be eligible to
run.
“Potential yell leaders must
meet certain academic standards,
file with the election committee
[and] then attend a mandatory
meeting,” she said. “After that, it
is up to the candidates to gain vot
er support.”
Dawn McGill, Student Govern
ment Association election com
missioner, said some rules of cam
paigning have changed from past
years.
“Students are only allowed to
hang one flier per billboard, and
no sandwich boards are allowed,”
she said. “These changes are to
keep the campus looking pre
sentable.”
Candidates are experimenting
with various forms of campaign
ing including creating personal
Websites.
Student voting is March 31 and
April 1 on campus. Last year,
10,000 students voted during elec
tions, and 7,000 voted in the
runoffs.
