T he tanning season is underway, offering
a variety of products and ways to aid
people in search of the best way to tan.
Tanning beds, enhancers and lotions, self tan
ners and the sun are all available to con
sumers this season.
There are two types of ultraviolet radiation:
ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB).
UVB rays trigger melanin production deep in
the skin. When these activated melanin gran
ules travel to the surface, UVA cause the
melanin to oxidize and turn brown, while too
much UVB can cause sunburn, or erythema.
Jason Luther, owner and manager of Desert
Tan in Dallas, said tanning beds are much
safer than people think.
“In an indoor tanning environment, the
amount of UVB rays are controlled, whereas
natural sunlight contains an uncontrolled
amount of ultraviolet light,” he said. “Tanning
beds also offer a deeper, darker and more
healthy looking tan than tanning outdoors.”
Luther said the other benefits of having a
tan are more psychological.
“People think they look better with a tan
which makes them feel better about them
selves,” he said.
However, public health experts and med
ical professionals are continuing to warn peo
ple about the dangers of ultraviolet radiation
from the sun, tanning beds and sun lamps.
Dr. Max Adler, a registered dermatologist,
said that contrary to what tanning parlors tell
customers, tanning beds are not safe at all.
“Ultraviolet radiation is harmful to the skin
in any form or environment; beds do not make
them safe,” he said.
Adler said there are some dangers associ
ated with tanning.
“UV radiation from the sun and tanning
beds can cause malignant melanoma, the
most serious form of skin cancer,” Adler said.
“The Darker Side of Tanning,” a pamphlet
provided by Adler, recognizes the people at
the greatest risk for developing these symp
toms.
“Persons with skin type I, those that always
burn, never tan and are sensitive to the sun.
Also persons with skin type II, burning easily
and tanning minimally,” it said.
David Esslinger, a freshman business ma
jor and a tanning salon employee, said the
safest way to tan is using self-tanning lotions.
“Tanning lotions contain stimulators that
cause the white blood cells to take in more
oxygen and speed up the tanning process,”
Esslinger said. “They (lotions) also contain vi
tamins and moisturizers to replenish moisture
to the skin and DNA recovery enzymes that
keep skin from getting a leathery texture.”
Adler said he also agrees that lotions are
the best way to achieve a tan.
“Self tanners are the only way to protect the
skin from receiving ultraviolet radiation and
the dangers it can cause,” he said.
Esslinger said tanning enhancer lotions

sold at salons are important for those that
choose to use tanning beds.
“The more you pay for a lotion, the better
tan you will receive,” he said. “You pay for the
ingredients and that is what makes a tan deep
and keeps it from fading.”
Esslinger said tanning lotions are necessary
if the perfect tan is to be acquired.
“If lotions are not used in a tanning bed,
the first five to seven minutes in the bed are
worthless,” he said. “Lotions are needed to
rise the melanin in the skin so it can tan; they
also extend the life of the tan one to ft
months providing a deeper, darker appt
ance.”
Esslinger also gave some advantagestc
