Bush endorses removal of Internet
AUSTIN (APJ
— Texas entre
preneurs want
the Legislature to
dump the sales
tax on Internet
BUSH
access.
The tax,
which few other
states collect,
hinders develop
ment of a key sector of the state’s
booming high-tech industry, they
say.
Gov. George W. Bush has en
dorsed the idea, and lawmakers
are considering it.
Eben Miller says he loves the
idea so much that if it does not
happen he will move part of his
Internet company — collegestu-
dent.com — out of Texas.
Miller’s company sets up In
ternet sites featuring activities at
about 260 universities and sells
advertisements to companies
wanting to reach those students.
Miller said he pays about
$2,000 a month in sales tax for ac
cess to Internet for his 45 em
ployees and for the links used by
the computers that hold the infor
mation for all of the campuses.
“I’m too proud to move out of
Texas altogether, but I wouldn’t
hesitate to move out technology
department out of Texas,” Miller
said.
That is what lawmafc
they hope to prevent.
At least 10 bills have
to exempt Internet acci
equipment purchased for
use from a sales thatca;
high as 8.25 percent when
sales tax is added.
In 1987, the Legislaii
panded the sales tax from
tangible goods to dataprt
and information services
