Softball team goes 3-0 in Hawa
No. 23 Aggies move to 26-7 with trio of wins in rain-shortened tournm
BY BEN WESTBROOK
The Battalion
The No. 23 Texas A&M Softball
Team improved to 26-7 on the sea
son with three wins at the Bank of
Hawaii Invitational in Honolulu
this weekend. The women were
undefeated in pool play before the
tournament was cut short Saturday
due to bad field conditions.
The Aggies began tournament
play Thursday with a 5-0 win
against the University of Connecti
cut. Sophomore Rachel Lewis led
A&M at the plate with a 3-of-4 per
formance, while junior Angie Long
and sophomore Tiffany Esters
knocked in two runs each.
The winner on the mound was
Aggie ace Amy Vining, who gave up
four hits while striking out nine bat
ters to improve to 13-5 on the year.
Friday, the Aggies squared off
against the University of Wiscon
sin and the University of Eastern
Illinois, pulling off one-run wins
in both contests.
Esters opened the scoring
against Wisconsin with a two-run
dinger over the centerfield fence.
The Badgers would return the fa
vor with two home runs late in
the game, but it would prove to be
too little too late as the Aggies
held on for a 3-2 win.
The winning RBI for the Aggies
came in the top of the seventh off a
triple by Lewis, plating freshman
Tammy Donnell for the third and fi
nal run of the game. Vining claimed
her second win of the tournament,
upping her season record to 14-5.
She also struck out nine batters, ty
ing her career high for the second
time in two games.
In the third game of the tour
nament, A&M rallied to come
from behind to defeat Eastern Illi
nois, 4-3, and finish the weekend
at 3-0. The women fell behind
early after Eastern Illinois’s two-
run first inning but were able to
come back and tie the game at 2-
2 in the second off RBI’s from
Donnell and Lewis.

knocking in Long and freshman
Lisa Klam with a double to right
field. Winning pitcher Jordana Bar
rack would retire the side in the
seventh to keep the win and im
prove her record to 9-2.
The women were scheduled to
play the 14th-ranked University of
California Sunday for the cham
pionship, but the tournament was
cancelled Saturday due to bad
weather and poor field condi
tions.
Amy Vining led all hurlers in
the tournament with 18 strike
outs, while Esters led all hitters at
the plate with six hits and six
RBI’s. Lewis ha,d six hits for the
