Junior shortstop Steve Scarbor

The blast was Scarborough’s first
homer of the season.
For the game, Scarborough went
3-6 with a homer, three RBIs and
two runs scored.
Chris Russ (5-0) pitched 3-2/3
innings of scoreless relief of starter
Chance Caple to pick up the win.
Russ allowed only two hits and
struck out five in his stint.
After their 11-inning thriller, the
Aggies came back to face Cal-State
Northridge in the nightcap.
Junior pitcher Casey Fossum
shut down Cal-State Northridge
pitching a two-hit, complete game
shutout as the Aggies cruised to a
7-0 win.
In seven innings of work, Fos
sum (5-3) struck out 13 batters
while walking only two.
Second baseman Sean Heaney
led the Aggie hitters, going 3-4 with
a run scored. Scarborough also
chipped in with a 3-5 performance
with two RBIs and a run scored.
The tournament finishes up for
the Aggies today as they take on
Cal-State Northridge at 1 p.m. and
UNLV at 7 p.m at Olsen Field.

Ramzy leaps to first
in long, triple jump

A&M sophomore Bashir Ramzy cap
tured first-place finishes in both the
long and triple jumps Saturday at the
Dr. Pepper Invitational at Baylor Uni
versity.
Ramzy placed first
in the triple jump
with a mark of 48
feet, 11/4 inches. He
took a second victory
with a jump of 23 feet
in the long jump. In
addition, he came in
third in the 110-meter
hurdles with a time of ramzy
14.45 seconds.
Backing up Ramzy’s heroics for the
Texas A&M Men’s Track and Field
Team was sophomore Kris Allen, who
took second in the 110-meter hurdles
with a time of 14.10, and junior TTavis
Grasha, who finished third in the
javelin competition with a throw of
203-6. Senior Michael Price took third
in the men’s 200-meter dash with a
time of 21.43.
The men’s 4x400-yard relay team of
juniors Johan Lannefors and Keith Ben
der and Travis McAshan and senior
Derrick Woods also took home a
bronze for the Aggies with a time of
3:10.55, their best of the year, while the
4xl00-meter relay team of Ramzy and
seniors Price, Toya Jones and Billy
Fobbs placed second in their event with
a time of 40.20.
For the women, freshman Katy Doyl
took first in the javelin competition
with a throw of 160 feet, 7 inches.
The mark provisionally qualifies
Doyl for June’s NCAA Outdoor Meet in
Boise, Idaho. Also taking the gold for
the women was junior Ann Dwyer,
who captured first in the women’s 800-
meter competition with a time of
2:14.89. Senior Marisa Thzzi placed
third in the event at 2:19.14.
Junior Chimika Carter took second
in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of
13.80. Freshman Burkhardt placed
third in the high jump with a season-
high leap of 5-7 1/4, while redshirt
freshman Natalie Young took third in
the 100-meter dash with a time of
11.89. Other third-place finishes for the
women included sophomore Meshell
Tfotter in the hammer throw at 165-8
and freshman Shylia Williams in the
long jump with a mark of 18-9 1/4.
Both the men’s and women’s teams
will return to action April 1 at the Texas
Relays in Austin.

Men’s Tennis at
Blue-Gray Classic
The No. 19 Texas A&M Men’s
Tennis Team competed in the Blue-
Gray Tennis Classic in Birmingham,
Ala. Thursday through Sunday.
In Thursday’s first round action,
the Aggies shutout Middle Ten
nessee State University, 4-0. The
Aggies’ doubles tandem of sopho
mores Dumitru Caradima and
Shuon Madden, ranked No. 1 na
tionally, improved to 15-1 on the
season, winning their match, 8-6.
In singles play, straight-set vic
tories from No. 30 Madden, Caradi
ma and freshman Keith From
clinched the match for the Aggies.
In Saturday’s action, the Aggies
fell to the nation’s No. 2 team, the
University of Illinois, 4-2.
For only the second time this sea
son, the Aggies dropped the doubles
point to the Fighting Illini, with Mad
den and Caradima losing for only the
second time this season.
Guarneri leads Ags
at championships
Texas A&M University’s Danielle
Guarneri took 11th place Saturday
in platform competition at the 1999
NCAA Division I Swimming and Div
ing Championships in Athens, Ga.
The junior, who placed 14th in
the tower event during last year’s
championships in Minneapolis,
Minn., scored the Aggies’ only six
points of the meet. Guarneri quali
fied for the championships by tak
ing the platform title in the NCAA
Zone-D Diving Championships in
Fayetteville, Ark. last weekend.
Guarneri entered the Aggie
record books by taking her second
All-American title at the meet, be
coming the first female diver to
earn multiple All-American titles.
Freshman swimmer Clara Ho
competed in her first NCAA tourna
ment and finished only two places
shy of the points for A&M with 18th
place in the 100-yard butterfly.
Meet veterans Tracy Evans and
Monica Stroman also competed in
Athens.
Guarneri’s points led A&M to
their second 31st place showing at
the national championship meet.
Men’s Golf fourth
at Border Olympics
The Texas A&M Men’s Golf Team
earned its highest finish of the sea
son Saturday, a fourth-place effort
at the Border Olympics in Laredo.
Senior Ryan Palmer, who won
the tournament last year, was one
of three Aggies who tied for tenth
place. Palmer scored a three-round
total of 220, as did junior Lee Reed
and sophomore Clay Fullick.
Also contributing for A&M were
senior Matt Welch, who tied for 16th
place, sophomore Casey Cronin with
a tie for 50th and freshman Sean
Gilliland at 55th. Freshman Josh
McCoy, competing as an individu .i.
finished in a tie for 29th place.
